Is It Time for Change?

It wouldn’t be summer if we weren’t debating the differences in play today versus the Golden Era of wrestling in New York State: the ‘70s. Yeah, I hate to do it. It’s the summer. What else is there to do than stir it up? A lot changed since.

Who Will Earn the Crown at the UE Duals?

On January 2nd, 13 ambitious teams from around New York State will make the trip to Union-Endicott to compete in New York’s most competitive dual meet tournament. Often the tournament champion is selected by the New York State Sports Writers Association (NYSSWA) as the number one team in the state. Though they use many events in their final selection, it is the keystone event in their analysis.

Friday Night Lights (recap and videos)

Friday Night Lights was a smashing success at Johns Burns Park in Massapequa on Friday Evening July 10. Unlike the tension at other wrestling touraments, Friday Nigh Lights was a combination festival, reunion, wrestling tournament rolled into one. Contrasted with a baseball game in progress on the adjacent field, it was on the mat where you could find all the excitement and fans, not so much for America’s favorite past time. A Day When Big Dreams Came One Day Closer to Being Realized

After a day when every competitor put it all on the line for their dreams, I left the arena that evening in awe of all the athletes: winners and losers. Everyone one of these boys came to wrestle their hearts out, and if you were present on Friday, you were privileged to witness an exciting day of wrestling from the opening pigtail round to the final whistle of the 285 pound wrestle backs.

(Not So) Super-32 For Empire State’s Top Grapplers

When the “Battle for the Belt” began at 8 a.m. on November 1st, 2008 from the Greensboro Coliseum, it was a day of hope for some of New York State’s finest wrestlers. It was going to be the day that several of them proved that they were for real. For others, it was going to be a coming out party. The event that introduced them to the nation.

When the “Battle for the Belt” began at 8 a.m. on November 1st, 2008 from the Greensboro Coliseum, it was a day of hope for some of New York State’s finest wrestlers. It was going to be the day that several of them proved that they were for real. For others, it was going to be a coming out party; the event that introduced them to the nation. The 15 hour span that was going to demonstrate once and for all that the Empire State belonged in the the conversation with perennial powerhouses such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New Jersey. Featuring a lineup that consisting of four returning State Champions, New York was primed to have a very special weekend….Unfortunately, the rest of the nation had different plans for the young men from New York.

First Annual Strong Island Tournament

On Sunday Strong Island hosted their first annual wrestling tournament at Nassau community college. It was well attended by Suffolk, Nassau, City, and New Jersey wrestlers.

On Sunday, October, 26th Strong Island hosted their first annual wrestling tournament at Nassau community college.  It was well attended by Suffolk, Nassau, City, and New Jersey wrestlers.  Suffolk county had a very strong turnout at the event.   At least half the wrestlers in every bracket were Suffolk county wrestlers.

For the first of a preseason tournament the turnout was great.  Based on the numbers I recorded, the brackets averaged around 20 wrestlers in the High School division with the 122 pound weight class having the most contestants at 26 competitors.
