Higher Education: All-American Perez Latest NYS Wrestler To Take Talents to Ivy League, Headed to Princeton.

All I can say is finally ! For those of you who loyally read all of these recruiting press releases, you know that in the past two years, I have written about just about every demographic possible; I’ve covered a Minnesota kid taking his act to Buffalo; I’ve highlighted back-to-back #1 recruits opting to become Bearcats; I even managed to sneak in an article about three kids from the same wrestling club all heading to different elite academic colleges. What follows is hardly the first Ivy League related piece that I have written, and with the way things are looking, it certainly will not be the last. Therefore, why does this particular story appeal to me? Because it hit me just a few seconds ago that today marks the first time that I will have the pleasure of paying tribute to a young man from my own hometown….After the countless recruiting updates (all of which I should note were a joy to pen), I finally get to pay homage to a Levittownian, thanks to the work, both in the classroom and on the wrestling mat of General Douglas MacArthur High School senior, Chris Perez, who just short of a week ago realized his personal dream when he formally committed to Princeton University. In making the big decision, the pride and joy of the Generals’ wrestling program became the second Long Islander to select the Chris Ayres Tigers as his next home. He joins All-Suffolk wrestler, Steven Leshinger of Sayville, who in early November, was the first member of the class of 2011 to opt for the New Jersey based institution of higher learning.  Now, all that remains is for a wrestler from the CHSAA to pledge his allegiance to the Orange and Black in order to complete the clean sweep. Tremendous Trio: Sayville Wrestling Club Sending Three to DI Ranks….

Like any sport, wrestling is a pyramid where only the very elite are able to successfully make the jump to the next level. For this reason, it is a major honor when a school, town, or for that matter a wrestling club is able to send even one student-athlete to the NCAA Division I level. With this sentiment is mind, I ask you, just how big a smile do you think adorns the face of Sayville WC coach Mike Vetrano, who over the course of the last few weeks has witnessed not one, not two, but three of his star pupils give commitments to DI schools? My guess is that the grin is ear to ear, and rightfully so….Starting on November 6th when All-Suffolk wrestler, Steven Leshinger (a representative of Sayville High School as well as the wrestling club) gave a verbal commitment to Princeton Tigers’ Head Coach, Chris Ayres, a chain reaction was created that saw Paul Alessandrini commit to Franklin & Marshall two days later, and the third of the trio, Mt. Sinai’s Frank Abbondanza pledge his allegiance to the Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina exactly one week after Leshinger’s initial commitment…When approached from just a wrestling aspect, this accomplishment is sufficient enough. However, to look at only one side of the proverbial picture is to ignore the true essence of what this achievement means. With all three of the selected institutions of higher learning ranked in the first tier by US News and World Report, it means that not only have these native sons done us all proud on the wrestling mat, they have also been role models in the classroom for their younger teammates. Coming from my background as a guidance counselor in training, the latter is every bit as significant to me as is the former; and both are deserving of your admiration and praise. The Garden (State) Strikes Back: Scarlet Knights Steal One of NYS Finest….

After weeks of sitting back and watching as their neighbors stock-piled blue-chipper upon blue-chipper, New Jersey struck back hard on Tuesday night, landing one of the top unsigned talents in the Empire State when 2009 NYS DI runner-up, Steven Rodrigues of Fox Lane High School in Section I, announced on his facebook that he had given a verbal commitment to Rutgers University. The landing of Rodrigues, the #8 prospect in New York’s senior class, marks the second consecutive year that Scarlet Knight Head Coach, Scott Goodale, has enticed a top-10 student-athlete from the N-Y to take his respective talent to the New Brunswick based campus. Last season, Goodale, now in his fourth year at the helm of the rising EIWA contender, won the sweepstakes for eventual 2010 NYS DI State Champion, Anthony Volpe…Now including the #4 national recruit, 3x NJ State Champion Andrew Campolattano, who for the time being is considered the exclusive property of the Scarlet Knight football program, Rodrigues becomes the second member of the class of 2011 to select Rutgers from among his many suitors. He joins 2010 New Jersey State placewinner (6th) Anthony Perrotti of West Essex Regional High School, who announced his college intentions in mid-October. Four Sure….Big Red Get Verbal from Fourth Top-100 Recruit, Mizzou State Champ Bricker Dixon

Cornell Big Red

A quote from one of my favorite movies of all-time, “Prefontaine,” stated that the protagonist’s drug was winning at everything. Apparently, this is a personal philosophy that Cornell University Head Coach, Rob Koll, also subscribes to. The owner/operator of the preseason #1 team in the nation, Koll continued his pursuit of the top-ranked recruiting class in 2011 today by getting a verbal commitment from 3x Missouri State finalist/2010 State Champion, Bricker Dixon, the #41 recruit in the current senior class. The Park Hill High School stud is the highest regarded of the quartet, joined by #65 Joe Rendina (Dundee, MI), #97 Caleb Richardson (Blair Academy), and #93 Duke Pickett (Woodberry Forest, VA)….The Big Red have also landed  twin 2010 NYS DII State Champions in Craig and Owen Scott (Palmyra-Macedon). Crimson Pins Down Barbato: 2010 NYS DI Runner-up Vebals to Harvard

The latin phrase “Veritas Christo et Ecclesiae”, translated as “truth for Christ and the Church,” may not mean much to many of us, but today it takes on a much greater significance for one of our native sons, Wantagh High School senior Joe Barbato. As the motto of Harvard University, this is a slogan that the 2010 NYS DI state runner-up will become very familiar with over the course of the next four years as it was announced this afternoon that the Warrior wrestler had given a verbal commitment to Crimson Head Coach, Jay Weiss…In making this decision, Barbato becomes the second wrestler from his high school to give a verbal commitment to a DI institution. He joins fellow state runner-up, Joe Kavanagh, who committed to Hofstra University all the way back in July. Barbato is the first member of the current senior class to select the Cambridge, Massachusetts based school of high learning. It’s A Bull Market: #44 Recruit, Waste, Commits to U. of Buffalo

To say that the recruiting front has been kind to New York State DI institutions the past 48 hours would be a minor understatement. With Empire State fanatics still buzzing with excitement over the announcement that the #19 recruit in the land, Nick Gwiazdowski, would be staying home and attending Binghamton, today was a day that the Bearcats’ SUNY brethren, the University of Buffalo took center stage when it was announced that 2x Minnesota state placewinner, Jake Waste, of perennial powerhouse Apple Valley High School (MN), had given a verbal commitment to Bulls’ head coach, Jim Beichner. Waste, who is ranked by InterMat as the #44 overall recruit in the class of 2011, becomes the first student-athlete this year to select the Mid American Conference member. In doing so, he also became the fourth member of his high school in the past week to formally make a college choice. He joins #37 recruit Matt Kelliher (Wisconsin on 10/19), #50 Steven Keogh (Minnesota on 10/20), and #1 overall Destin McCauley (Wisconsin on 10/24) in solidifying his future plans. Beary Beary Good Day for Binghamton: Top Recruit in NYS Verbals to Bearcats

If you ask the best coaches in the country, a lot of them will tell you that the key to any successful DI wrestling program, is the ability to keep the instate talent home. In recent times, no body in the Empire State has been better at that than Binghamton Head Coach, Pat Popolizio. Today marked a continuation of this trend when it was announced that for the second consecutive year, the #1 ranked recruit in the New York State had elected to make that upstate based school his college destination. In 2010, it was Greene High School’s 2x NYS DII Champion Tyler Beckwith signing with the Bearcats; 2011 will forever be known as the “year of the Gwiz” as the defending 215-pound DII State Champion from Duanesburg High School, Nick Gwiazdowski, revealed on his facebook that he would be heading to Binghamton next Fall….Gwiazdowski, the #19 recruit in the nation according to the InterMat top-100, becomes the third member of the current senior class to formally commit to Popolizio and staff. He is joined by Colton Perry (Windsor High School) and 2009 NYS DII Champion Derak Heyman (Tioga), both of whom made gave verbals to the SUNY school last month. Pickett Makes His Pick: #93 Recruit Makes It Another Banner Day for Big Red

Duke Pickett

I like Cornell University Head Coach, Rob Koll; I really do. However, if he continues to make these recruiting press releases a daily ritual, than I am afraid I am going to have to end our friendship….While it goes without saying that the previous statement was obviously meant in good fun, the one thing that is not a joke is the amazing job that Koll and staff have been doing thus far in landing elite talent from the class of 2011. As the calendar switches to October and next month’s early signing period will be here before we know it, there has been no rest for the weary in Ithaca as seemingly every day a new blue-chip recruit is informing us that they have selected the Big Red as their college choice. Less than 24 hours after putting the finishing touches on the press release announcing that #65 recruit, Joe Rendina, has decided on the returning NCAA runners-up, I find myself experiencing a touch of deja vu as again I am back on my laptop to formally break the news that for the second straight evening, an InterMat top-100 recruit, #93 Duke Pickett of Woodberry Forest High School has given a verbal commitment to the Ivy League institution of higher learning. Pickett, a 2010 Virginia State Champion, becomes the third top-100 honoree and fifth overall student-athlete to pick (no pun intended) Cornell.  He joins Rendina, along with #79 Caleb Richardson and twin NYS DII champs Craig and Owen Scott. Redman Wants You, Gets Rendina: Michigan Standout Becomes Latest to Commit to Koll…

Redman

Just 10 days after getting verbal commitments from a pair of NYS DII Champions in the persons of the Scott twins, Cornell Head Coach, Rob Koll had cause to celebrate again when 2010 Michigan State Champion, Joe Rendina, the #65 ranked recruit in the land according to InterMat, announced live on Wrestlingaddix.com that the Big Red had won the sweepstakes for his services.  The EIWA conference powerhouse beat out the hometown favorite Spartans of Michigan State (who in their own right have had an impressive start to the class of 2011 recruiting season), as well as the University of North Carolina, who represented the only other institutions to make the final cut on Rendina’s short list of schools. A Bear(cat) of A Good Recruit: 2x NYS DII Finalist/2009 Champion To Stay In-State; Verbals to Binghamton

Derek Heyman

Earlier this morning, Tioga High School rising senior, Derak Heyman, a 2x NYS DII finalist and 2009 State Champion, was named as one of the top-10 members of NYS’ class of 2011 as a part of the InterMat Wrestling-49 series. This was only the start of the good news for this immensely talented young man and his family as several hours later, he revealed to Lighthouse Wrestling that after weighing all of his options, he had elected to give a verbal commitment to reigning Colonial Athletic Association champions, the Bearcats of Binghamton University. In doing so, Heyman becomes the second blue-chip recruit in less than a week from the Empire State to officially break the news of his college plans; He joins fellow 2x state finalist (albeit different divisions) Grant Greene, who on the 25th of this month, broke the news that he would be continuing his academic and athletic pursuits at Northwestern University. Heyman is the first elite wrestler to announce his intentions to compete for Coach Pat Popolizio and staff. The (Wild) Cats’ Meow: 3x NYS Finalist/’09 Champion Greene Verbals to Northwestern

Northwestern

Those of you who have followed my writings from local message board icon (kidding, of course) to freelance wrestling journalist know that I have always had a special place in my heart for the New York State Catholic League. It was the place of origin of my now well established affinity for the world’s oldest and greatest sport (to borrow from one of my literary heroes, Mike Chapman). Therefore, it is no understatement to say that I take immense pride and satisfaction when learning that one of its student-athletes has “done good”. For this reason, last night took on great significance to me when I was informed that the league’s brightest star, 3x NYS finalist/2009 NYS DI Champion, Grant Greene, of St. Anthony’s High School, had given a verbal commitment to compete for Coach Drew Pariano as a part of the class of 2015 at Northwestern University. Greene, who will be named to the top-10 seniors list when the New York installment of the Wrestling-49 series is released at a future date, becomes the first rising senior from the recruiting class of 2011 to formally announce his intentions to continue his academic and athletic pursuits at the Evanston, IL based institution of higher learning. The Neverending Story: Cornell Continues to Dominate Recruiting War by Securing Verbal from 2011 #80 Caleb Richardson

Cornell Big Red

If you are an avid reader of Lighthouse, it is likely that you recall that every other week it seemed that I was writing a press release announcing that another blue-chip recruit had committed to wrestle for coach Rob Koll and staff at Cornell University. In fact, so deep was the 2010 recruiting class that Earl Smith from D1collegewrestling.net ranked it as the #4 class in the nation…Following the finalization of such a talent class, one might make the assumption that 2011 would be a down year on the recruiting front. Nothing could be further from the truth as Cornell began its quest to turn in their third consecutive top-10 with last night’s breaking news that the #80 ranked recruit in the InterMat-100, Caleb Richardson, has given a verbal commitment to the reigning NCAA National runner-up, Big Red. A Little Local Flavor: 2010 NYS DI Runner-up Kavanagh Verbals to Pride

Friday July 9th was a good night for Hofstra University Head Wrestling Coach, Tom Shifflet, as he learned that the Pride had just picked up their first recruit from the class of 2011 when 2010 NYS DI 171-pound State runner-up/2x Nassau County Champion Joe Kavanagh of Wantagh High School informed the fourth year coach of his decision to give a verbal commitment to the hometown university. In doing so, the rising senior becomes the third high profile Warrior wrestler in as many years to choose the Hempstead based institution of higher learning. He will be joined by Steve Bonanno (2009 NCAA Qualifier @125) and Matt Loew (2x NYS DI Finalist/anticipated starter at 197 in 2011). In speaking with Kavanagh’s father, Jim, the realization that his son would be donning the Pride Blue & Gold in 2012 was described as a dream come true for the family, especially the future HU student-athlete himself. Golden Bear: 152-Pound NYS Champion Lanzi Headed to Brown

Early this afternoon, I learned from a person very close to the situation that 2010 152-pound New York State DI Champion, Giuseppi Lanzi, has selected the Bears of Brown University as his college choice. As gifted in the classroom as he is on the wrestling mat, Lanzi, with good reason, had his pick of top colleges/universities. However, as was explained to me, the Rhode Island based university has always felt like the right fit for the Amsterdam High School product. Therefore, when he formally received the acceptance letter from the school long rumored to be his #1 choice, it became a fitting ending to a scholastic career that has been nothing short of remarkable. By George, I Think They Got Him: NHSCA Junior National Champ Verbals to Big Red

Cornell Big Red
Cornell Big Red

It was several months ago that a Cornell University insider informed me that they felt extremely confident that they would land the services of 2009 NHSCA Junior National Champion, Billy George…Yesterday, speculation became fact when the Long Branch High School senior verbally committed to wrestle for the Big Red and Head Coach, Rob Koll….The announcement that George would be Ithaca, NY bound further added to the already deep 2010 recruiting class that InterMat recently ranked as #5 following the conclusion of last month’s early signing period. The Big (Bear)Cat: Johnson City Heavyweight, Lance Moore, Commits to Binghamton

It has been said that Lance Moore was a NYer before he was officially a NYer….A pupil of Scott Green at the famed Shamrock Wrestling Club, Moore has honed his skills by working out with some of the finest talent that the Empire State has to offer…And on Thursday, all of that hard work and dedication paid off when he announced his intentions to continue his academic and athletic career at rising Colonial Athletic Association contender, Binghamton University….By virtue of making this decision, Moore, who kicked off November by finishing 5th at the prestigious Super-32 tournament, ensured that the relationship with Green (who is an Assistant on Coach Pat Popolizio’s staff) will be extended for at least the four or five years. (K)night Time: #50 Recruit/2x Iowa State Champion Headed to Cornell

 alt=

At first glance, it might have seemed like a foregone conclusion that Evan Knight, a senior at Urbandale High School in Iowa, would end up donning a cardinal and gold Iowa State singlet….After all, his father, Steve Knight, was an All-American for the Cyclones and spent three seasons on the Iowa State coaching staff. His uncle, Dan Knight, was also an All-American for the Cyclones. Three other Iowa high school seniors with Iowa State in their blood, Michael Moreno, Kyven Gadson, and Trevor Voelker, have already announced their intentions to be Cyclones.

But on Tuesday, Knight chose a different path than his father and uncle when he gave a verbal commitment to Rob Koll and the Cornell Big Red. Knight chose Cornell over Iowa State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Arizona State. He projects collegiately at 184 pounds. Chris Villalonga

On Tuesday evening, it was confirmed that after weeks of speculation about which Ivy League institution would land his services, Blair Academy senior, Chris Villalonga, had given a verbal commitment to continue his academic and athletic career under the guidance of Big Red head Coach, Rob Koll…This decision came just weeks after Villalonga’s Bucs teammate, #99 recruit Jesse Shanaman, also announced to attend the Ithaca, NY based campus.

With the addition of the three-time defending National Prep champion to their recruiting class, the Big Red have now successfully managed to land both the #3 and #4 recruits in the nation, having received a verbal from Marshall Peppelman (2x PA AAA State Champion) in late September…And what’s scary, is that according to Koll, the Big Red are expected to receive at least three more big name commitments in the coming weeks (per NCAA guidelines, names were not permitted to be discussed) Continue reading “All Victories Starts With V: #3 Recruit Villalonga Commits to Cornell”

In doing so, the multi-sport athlete from Pioneer High School became the third mega prospect in as many years from New York to make Norman his home away from home…Last season, Spates and company won the sweepstakes for the services of 4x NYS DII Champion, Alex Ekstrom and NYS DI placewinner/2x NHSCA All-American Clay Reeb…Ekstrom is expected to be in contention for the starting spot at 133-pounds this season.
