“If you don’t believe, than you don’t belong.” So are the words that adorn the homepage of the St. Anthony’s High School wrestling website. The concept of belief in one’s self is a trademark in the wrestling room of the South Huntington based perennial Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) powerhouse. However, in all honesty, [...]
It’s that time of the year: Time to put the footballs away, Time to lace up the wrestling shoes and get your headgear out of the closet, Time to stop eating all those great meals, and time to step on the scale.
Last season was a rough one for the Hofstra University wrestling program. Hit hard by a number of season-ending injuries to key starters, the Pride failed to have any wrestlers earn All-American honors at the 2010 NCAA Division I championships.

The 2009 New York State Catholic High School wrestling season was one that was marked by the return to the top of Monsignor Farrell High School. Who will be the contenders at each weight? Which wrestler will win each weight class? With weight certifications and strategic weight class placement those are questions we may not be able to answer just yet. Another question being asked as we approach the beginning of the 2009-2010 Suffolk County wrestling season is the location of the county tournament. The summer has passed by all too quickly, and the entire team has returned to Ithaca. We had a productive summer, and I am ecstatic to have everyone back. Actually this comes as no surprise to me since we had plus or minus 20 wrestlers training in Ithaca for all or part of the entire summer.
This weekend, Hofstra University will be looking to add their ninth consecutive conference tournament championship to the trophy case. However, unlike the previous eight seasons where the Pride entered the tournament as the favorites, 2009 marks a new role for Coach Tom Shifflet’s team, that of underdog.
Much of this shakeup at the top can be attributed [...]
Based upon the section winners and alternate qualifier lists by weight released today, here is a weight-by-weight preview of the NYPHSAA wrestling championships this weekend. Once the final seeds are determined and tournament charts by weight are released we will release our state finalist picks for each weight. Our sectional champion pick is already determined as section 11 – Suffolk County. The depth within this section this year seems to be insurmountable. Sections 2 and 9 should be competitive in Albany this year followed by sections 8, 1, 4 and 6.
