Tis the Season: Journeymen Sprawl & Brawl Highlights Start of ’10-’11 College Season

Scott Green, the legendary New York State Junior Coach, as well a former assistant coach at Binghamton University and the current head coach at prep powerhouse Wyoming Seminary, recently made the comment on his facebook profile that it is starting to “smell like wrestling season.” For many enthusiasts, with matches officially kicking off this past weekend, this is a statement that is abundant with veritas and intensity. However, while I acknowledge the importance of all matches, for me, the start of the college season is always marked by the first of Frankie Popolizio and Journeymen Wrestling Club’s two mega-events; 2010/2011 is no different as I, along with a plethora of fans located in the Northeast, anxiously await the calendar hitting November 21st, the date of the JWC’s annual Sprawl and Brawl Duals….Hosted by the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions, Binghamton University, this year’s field is highlighted by the participation of teams such as Penn State University, Harvard University, Rutgers, Michigan State University, and West Virginia, as well as the aforementioned Bearcats. A Look Back at 2010 Section XI Tournament

It was another quality final at Stony Brook and now we need to take a look back at the matches and also look at who may be getting wildcards and a trip to Albany.

It was another quality final at Stony Brook and now we need to take a look back at the matches and also look at who may be getting wildcards and a trip to Albany. The John Glenn Tsunami Aims for the Team Title

Like a tsunami, the John Glenn wrestling program has been steadily and quietly closing in on Section XI dominance. From an undistinguished Section XI finish in 2003 followed by incremental and steady improvement, the John Glenn tsunami hit shore in 2009 leaving a path of destruction in its wake. There were hints of what was to come in 2008 when they placed fourth in Section XI behind perennial powerhouses Brentwood, Hauppauge, and Huntington. Still, many have pierced Section XI’s top 5 standing only to have fallen out contention the following season.
