With disappointment and relief, I wish to inform the Lighthouse audience that our coverage of the 2010-11 season was our last. Many factors contributed to this decision. Suffice it to say, it regrettably did not work.
This past Tuesday, the fifth and final member of the InterMat Top-100 recruits list from New York, Angelo Malvestuto officially came off of the market when he announced that he would be continuing his academic and athletic career in Blacksburg, VA for Head Coach Kevin Dresser and the Virginia Tech Hokies…The news broke exactly one week after fellow Empire State top-100 recruit, Nick Wilcox (#70) revealed that he had decided to do his collegiate wrestling at Bloomsburg University…

Marshall Peppelman was in seventh grade when he first started attending Rob Koll’s Cornell wrestling camps in the summer with his teammates. His team attended the camp every summer and Peppelman’s relationship grew with Koll as did his admiration for the Cornell wrestling program. But it wasn’t until Peppelman started looking at colleges when he realized that Cornell offered everything he was looking for in a college.. On Wednesday morning (September 9th), InterMat broke the story that that 2009 Suffolk County Champion, Billy Coggins, has elected to continue his academic and athletic career in Charlottesville as a member of the University of Virginia’s class of 2014. In making this decision, the 2009 NYS DI place-winner (5th @160 pounds) became the third member of the Rocky Point High School wrestling team to formally give a verbal commitment to the college/university of his choice. He is joined by the #75 ranked recruit in the nation, Stephen Dutton, who committed to Lehigh University in early July and Anthony Volpe, who just two weeks after Dutton, announced that he would be Rutgers bound…The success of these three young gentlemen are indicative of the quality program run by Head Coach, Darren Goldstein. Less than 72 hours after concluding his 2009 campaign by earning double All-American honors at the Asics/Vaughan Junior National Tournament, the #11 recruit in the class of 2010, Tyler Beckwith, officially announced that he is off of the market, verbally committing to the State University of New York-Binghamton….He becomes the first rising senior to align himself with Coach Pat Popolizio’s quickly emerging Bearcat program. Anthony Volpe of Miller Place, New York has given a verbal commitment to Rutgers. Volpe placed third at the 2009 NYSPHSAA State Wrestling Championships in Division I at 145 pounds. He is a three-time NHSCA Nationals All-American and a 2007 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman All-American. It marks the second verbal commitment that the Rutgers wrestling program has received this month.
