Tyler Beckwith of Greene (N.Y.) High became the first four-time National High School Champion as the 21st annual NHSCA National High School Seniors Wrestling Championships presented by the U.S. Navy concluded tonight at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
After falling behind 2-0 on a first-period takedown, Beckwith reversed Isaiah Williams of Haverhill (Mass.) High to his back for a 4-2 lead in the 171-pound final. Beckwith added a second-period reversal en route to a 6-3 victory. The Binghamton University recruit added the Senior Nationals title to the titles he won the previous three years in the National Junior, Sophomore and Freshman Championships. It seems Suffolk should send anywhere from between 25 to 29 wrestlers to Albany depending upon how the wild-card draws fall…similar to last year’s count. This was how close to the 98-pound Junior National freestyle title rising Kings Park senior, Maxwell Soria, was this morning as he kicked off the final day of the week long festivities under the FargoDome….Winning the first period 2-0 against his finals opponent, Ruben Navejas of Washington, on the strength of a counter roll-through, Soria was the closest to the crown that any Empire Stater had been over the course of the past seven days….But, as simplistic as it may sound, a championship for New York was just not meant to be.
