Mat Side With Rob Koll – The Scuffle

It has been a while since my last musings, but that does not mean nothing has been happening in the Cornell wrestling world. As a matter of fact, we have been very busy and I am slightly surprised and disappointed that I have not heard many complaints about my silence.

It has been a while since my last musings, but that does not mean nothing has been happening in the Cornell wrestling world. As a matter of fact, we have been very busy and I am slightly surprised and disappointed that I have not heard many complaints about my silence. I can only surmise this means no one reads my ramblings or those who do are enjoying the break. For better or worse, however, I am back and here is the update.

Mat Side with Rob Koll: Season Recap December 9th

We have made it through the first half of the season with our record unblemished and I am excited for what awaits us in the second semester. Considering our wrestlers are getting ready for finals, I feel it is an appropriate time to give them performance evaluations as well.

2nd Annual Diano Awards

Hey All,

It’s been a while since I last had the chance to sit at the old laptop and pound out an article for my loyal readers. Therefore, with graduate school set to resume next Tuesday, I knew that it might be long and far between before I had the opportunity to write. Hence, I decided that if I was going to fully commit to writing a piece, I might as well go big by bringing back the Annual Diano Awards. From what I recall, it was one of my more popular pieces from the 2009 season. Thus, I know that I need to give it my all if I am to match the warm responses that I received last year. I shall do my best. Continue reading “2nd Annual Diano Awards”

by Matt Diano and Bill Miller

With only days left before the opening round of the 2010 NCAA DI wrestling championships, wrestling fans from coast-to-coast are seething with anticipation of a donnybrook amongst the top teams in the nation challenging for the coveted team championship. Last year’s championship ended with Iowa winning over Ohio State by the slimmest margin in NCAA tournament history by the score of 96.5 to 92. And this year’s may yet again go down in the history books. Continue reading “2010 NCAA DI Championship Preview and Predictions”

Rob Koll and Troy Nickerson at EIWASix days until the NCAA’s and I am pleased to say the Big Red grapplers are ready to roll. Special thanks to all the Cornell red clad fans who showed up in Bethlehem to support the team. Although I look at this tournament as nothing more than an NCAA qualifier I have to admit I enjoy winning it if for no other reason so that Lehigh doesn’t. Big Red Repeat As Scuffle Champions: Dake, Lewnes, and Simaz Win Individual Crowns

Cornell Big Red
Cornell Big Red

They practice scrambling at Cornell; this is a certainty. If the finals of the 2009 Southern Scuffle on the campus of UNC-Greensboro taught us nothing else, it is that Big Red wrestlers have made an art out of countering their opponents’ offensive attacks and utilizing their scrambling ability to remain in control of matches at all times…If you need convincing, I suggest that tomorrow when the video hits the intermit, you check out the masterful job that true freshman, Kyle Dake, did in his 141-pound title bout against Minnesota’s Mike Thorn. A battle of two top-10 ranked wrestlers in the nation, Dake not only maneuvered his way out of a spladle-like predicament early in the first period, he also continually got the best of the not stop hit/react action that best described the final period of the title match…Trailing 4-2 to start the third period, the former 3x NHSCA National Champion, quickly scored the reversal to even the match. However, realizing that a Thorn escape could very well be all she wrote, the true freshman from Lansing, NY did whatever it took to avoid surrendering that make or break point…Dake’s efforts paid off as he successfully rode out remainder of the period, thus locking up the riding time point to claim the title by a score of 5-4. This victory was doubly special for the CU wrestler in that in addition to individual glory, the win served as the nail in second place, Minnesota’s coffin as the Big Red repeated as the team champions at the annual holiday tournament. Mat Side with Rob Koll – Las Vegas Invitational

Sorry it took me an extra day to get this update out. We took the redeye back and I expected to write it on the plane flight back.

Sorry it took me an extra day to get this update out. We took the redeye back and I expected to write it on the plane flight back. Unfortunately Delta Airlines chose to play an evil joke upon me by wedging me between Damion Hahn and Taylor Moore. I attempted to reach my computer, which was under my seat, but my arms were tightly pinned to my side by Damion and Taylor’s massive girth. Taylor prides himself on his weight gain now that he has moved up to 285. Damion on the other hand still claims to be hovering around 200 lbs. This claim is accuratel; however, it is based on what he would weigh on the planet Mars. Despite terrible travel, 28 hours of travel time to get there and a redeye back, the team wrestled very well finishing a point shy of first place.
