Wrestlings Biggest Challenge

Since the late 1970’s wrestling has been taking a “big” hit in regard to the losses of hundreds of collegiate wrestling programs that has also impacted our world and Olympic effort.

Obviously the ripple down effect has reduced the HS numbers as well. The number of participants have been decreasing each year. Wrestling in 1978, had over 330,000 HS wrestlers with 9800 teams with over 600 college teams in the NJCAA, NAIA and the NCAA.

We now have 230,000 wrestlers in 10,000 high schools. The colleges are fighting for survival and the world level athletes have no resources to compete globally.

The challenge for all sports is at the support level. Colleges and even high school administrators, look at one very important component when faced in a financial crisis in respect to their budgets.

How many people are we attracting to our Duals & Games?

What wrestling needs more than wrestlers is MORE FANS. The more fans attending & supporting wrestling at the HS and College level the more kids will give wrestling a chance while providing the resources to expand the sport.

KICK-OFF for 2010-11 Wrestling Season

Pride Wrestlers Impress the Fans

Pride fans descended upon the Physical Education Building on Thursday evening like ants queuing to a picnic.   For the large crowd in attendance (north of 500 attendees), they were treated to 13 action packed wrestling bouts.  The performance was every bit as exciting as anticipated.  There was the overtime win by Vince Varela over Luke Vaith, the dominating performance of Matt Loew, and the hardnosed battle between a pair of lightening quick competitors Justin Accordino and Zach Clemente. Hofstra Pride Wrestle-off Preview

On Thursday evening October 28th at 7:30PM Pride fans get their first peak of what is to come in 2010/11 when Hofstra holds their annual wrestle-off for the starting positions. The event, which will be held at the newly named Physical Education Center (formerly the PFC), will provide the student-athletes with the opportunity to display all the progress that accompanied the hard work, dedication and unmatched commitment put forth during the off-season. A one hour clinic (scheduled for 6:30pm) will precede the festivities.

By Bill Miller and Matt Diano

In unison, gathered at one end of the wrestling room, pulling and pushing a disc appearing to be the size and weight of a manhole cover, sweat, and pained look upon their faces, the Pride wrestlers locked their eyes and ears on the tall figure with buzz cut hair centered in front and bellowing commands. The soaked t-shirts, grunts, and damp musty scents surfaced mental images of workouts once forgotten. All at once I felt the physical pain and mental torture of pushing yourself beyond your limits in pursuit of glory. That was the Pride wrestling team gathered one Friday morning at 7AM preparing for the 2010/11 season.

Going into our third season at Lighthouse Wrestling, I’m quite excited for the upcoming year.  Since the end of the first season, I’ve been busy working to have additional contributors to the site.  It’s not easy.  To put it succinctly, few contributors will write for the love of it, even less will continue for any length of time.   However, I’m happy to say that a number of good people have offered to contribute in 2010/2011, and I’m hopeful they will deliver. Now that we have wrestled through the most rigorous portion of the season it is nice to have a few “lighter” matches leading up the EIWA tournament. Out of twenty matches wrestled, we had only one wrestler lose a match. Unfortunately that same wrestler, John Basting, not only lost a match but suffered an injury in his final bout. I am not sure when he will return to the mats.

Journeymen Wrestling Presents Mega Events: Sprawl & Brawl (Nov. 22); Northeast Duals (Nov. 28th)

As the calendar hits mid-November, three certainties await the fanatical wrestling fan…First, the college season is now underway and will absorb the majority of your free time for the next five months; Second, Thanksgiving will probably be the last time you are allowed to hit as much as you want without feeling guilty about hunger pains to your friend, child, neighbor, etc. (yes wrestlers, we see the dirty looks you give us when we pig out in front of you); and finally, we are only weeks away from two of the premier early season collegiate events, the Sprawl and Brawl and Northeast Duals, both presented by Frank Popolizio and the Journeymen Wrestling Club. Return to the Lions’ Den: Hofstra Kicks Off ’09’-10 Season With Wrestle-Offs

This morning, a small but immensely enthusiast crowd journeyed to Islip High School to watch as the Hofstra University wrestling team took their first steps in what has the potential to be another successful season for the nine time defending conference champions (eight of which have come as members of the Colonial Athletic Association) by holding their annual wrestle-offs.

Divided into teams representing the University’s colors of Blue and Gold, 15 incredibly talented student-athletes took to the match to give the “fannies” a taste for what they can expect to see over the course of the next five months…With such a young squad returning from last season, today’s festivities offered the Pride a faithful the opportunity to see the level of progression made from one year to the next by HU’s young guns. In addition, with newcomers expected to break into the lineup at 133, 141, and 285 respectively, today’s competition marked a welcoming/initiation of some sought….No one failed to disappoint !!! Loew And Behold: 2009 NYS Runner-up Verbals to Pride

loewpostEarly this morning, I received a message stating that rising Wantagh senior, Matt Loew, was expected to give a verbal commitment to Hofstra University following the conclusion of the Asics/Vaughan Cadet/Junior National Tournaments, to be contested under the FargoDome, commencing this coming weekend. However, in true breaking news fashion, LHW just learned that the 2009 NYS DI runner-up at 189 pounds had decided to push up the date of the announcement and informed Coach Tom Shifflet and his staff sometime this evening of his decision to stay loyal to his L.I. roots by continuing his bright academic and athletic careers at the Hempstead based institution….Loew becomes the second New York wrestler this week and the third overall to verbally commit to the eight-time Colonial Athletic Association champions. He is joined by 2007 NYS Champion Cody Ruggirello (Valley Central-section IX) who just this past Saturday revealed that he would be uniting with older brother Lou in the Fall of 2010, and two-time defending New York State Champion, Nick Arujau, the #42 ranked recruit in the nation out of Syosset High School. Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Ruggirellos: Cody to Join Lou At HU

After three years of speculation and anticipation, the news came down Friday evening that section IX standout, Cody Ruggirello, will join his older brother Lou, at Hofstra University in the Fall of 2010. Following the younger Ruggirello’s decision to give a verbal commitment to Pride Head Coach, Tom Shifflet, rumors immediately started that older brother will take a redshirt season in ’09-’10 to allow the siblings one year to wrestle together, something they last did in 2006 when Lou was a senior and Cody an eighth grader at Valley Central High School. New Badger In Town: UW’s Tanelli Joins Pride Coaching Stafff

Three-time NCAA Championship qualifier and 2009 All-American Zach Tanelli has been named an assistant coach on the Hofstra Wrestling coaching staff, Pride head coach Tom Shifflet announced Thursday.

A University of Wisconsin graduate Tanelli placed fourth at the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Missouri in March. The Short Hills, New Jersey native recorded a 6-2 record, including five straight victories, in the National Championships to earn his first All-America honor. Tanelli, who was the top-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds for eight weeks through the conference tournament, placed second in the Big 10 Championships. The 2008 Midlands champion finished the year with a 31-6 record, including a 15-1 mark in duals and a 7-0 record in the Big 10 and ranked second in the country.

Tanelli earned his first NCAA Championship bid in 2007 as a wildcard after placing eighth in the Big Ten Championships. He recorded a 21-10 overall record including a 19-3 mark in dual matches and a 5-3 record in the Big 10. Tanelli also led the Badgers in dual points with 80. As a junior in 2007-08, he earned his second NCAA Championship bid by finishing fifth in the Big 10 Championships. Tanelli posted a 3-2 record at Nationals to finish the season with a 28-12 record including a 13-5 mark in duals and a 5-3 record in conference action.

A two-time New Jersey State Championship runner-up out of Millburn High School, Tanelli notched an 8-3 record and captured the Pointer Open title as a red-shirt freshman at Wisconsin in 2005-06. During his four-year career at Wisconsin, Tanelli posted an 88-31 overall record including a 49-10 mark in duals and a 17-6 record in the Big 10.

Tanelli holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Wisconsin. He replaces Joe Dubuque, who left Hofstra in June to become an assistant at his alma mater, Indiana University.
