What a Difference a Year Makes for the Pride?

A year later, a year stronger, and determined to exorcise the curse from their wrestling souls, the Pride reclaimed the CAA title ripping away the title from the Binghamton Bearcats, the team who terminated their championship streak in 2010 at 9 straight, and qualified 7 athletes for the championships in Philadelphia PA.

r1-934R3574In the 2010 championships in Omaha Nebraska, the Hofstra Pride wrestling team sent two grapplers to compete for All-American titles.  Their stranglehold on the CAA conference title was smashed when their top athletes fell to season ending injuries.   Unlike season’s past when the Pride would wrestle deep and return with hardware, they exited the tournament on the first day after having compiled a 1 and 4 record.

A Little Local Flavor: 2010 NYS DI Runner-up Kavanagh Verbals to Pride

Friday July 9th was a good night for Hofstra University Head Wrestling Coach, Tom Shifflet, as he learned that the Pride had just picked up their first recruit from the class of 2011 when 2010 NYS DI 171-pound State runner-up/2x Nassau County Champion Joe Kavanagh of Wantagh High School informed the fourth year coach of his decision to give a verbal commitment to the hometown university. In doing so, the rising senior becomes the third high profile Warrior wrestler in as many years to choose the Hempstead based institution of higher learning. He will be joined by Steve Bonanno (2009 NCAA Qualifier @125) and Matt Loew (2x NYS DI Finalist/anticipated starter at 197 in 2011). In speaking with Kavanagh’s father, Jim, the realization that his son would be donning the Pride Blue & Gold in 2012 was described as a dream come true for the family, especially the future HU student-athlete himself. 2010 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament Preview:

Coaches around the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) circled 2010 on their calendar as the year Hofstra’s eight-year run as conference champions could be ending. Barring a monster tournament by the Pride, this will be the year the championship trophy goes somewhere other than Hempstead, N.Y.

But which university snatches up that team championship is still in doubt. Three teams have legitimate shots at winning the conference tournament: Old Dominion, Binghamton, and Rider. The tournament will be held on Rider’s campus in Lawrenceville, N.J., March 5-6 Continue reading “2010 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament Preview:”
