Tis the Season: Journeymen Sprawl & Brawl Highlights Start of ’10-’11 College Season

Scott Green, the legendary New York State Junior Coach, as well a former assistant coach at Binghamton University and the current head coach at prep powerhouse Wyoming Seminary, recently made the comment on his facebook profile that it is starting to “smell like wrestling season.” For many enthusiasts, with matches officially kicking off this past weekend, this is a statement that is abundant with veritas and intensity. However, while I acknowledge the importance of all matches, for me, the start of the college season is always marked by the first of Frankie Popolizio and Journeymen Wrestling Club’s two mega-events; 2010/2011 is no different as I, along with a plethora of fans located in the Northeast, anxiously await the calendar hitting November 21st, the date of the JWC’s annual Sprawl and Brawl Duals….Hosted by the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions, Binghamton University, this year’s field is highlighted by the participation of teams such as Penn State University, Harvard University, Rutgers, Michigan State University, and West Virginia, as well as the aforementioned Bearcats. He joins fellow state runner-up, Joe Kavanagh, who committed to Hofstra University all the way back in July. Barbato is the first member of the current senior class to select the Cambridge, Massachusetts based school of high learning. As the calendar hits mid-November, three certainties await the fanatical wrestling fan…First, the college season is now underway and will absorb the majority of your free time for the next five months; Second, Thanksgiving will probably be the last time you are allowed to hit as much as you want without feeling guilty about hunger pains to your friend, child, neighbor, etc. (yes wrestlers, we see the dirty looks you give us when we pig out in front of you); and finally, we are only weeks away from two of the premier early season collegiate events, the Sprawl and Brawl and Northeast Duals, both presented by Frank Popolizio and the Journeymen Wrestling Club.
