Editor’s Message – What’s in Store for 2010/2011

Going into our third season at Lighthouse Wrestling, I’m quite excited for the upcoming season. Since the end of the first season, I’ve been busy working to have additional contributors to the site.

Going into our third season at Lighthouse Wrestling, I’m quite excited for the upcoming year.  Since the end of the first season, I’ve been busy working to have additional contributors to the site.  It’s not easy.  To put it succinctly, few contributors will write for the love of it, even less will continue for any length of time.   However, I’m happy to say that a number of good people have offered to contribute in 2010/2011, and I’m hopeful they will deliver. The Neverending Story: Cornell Continues to Dominate Recruiting War by Securing Verbal from 2011 #80 Caleb Richardson

Cornell Big Red

If you are an avid reader of Lighthouse, it is likely that you recall that every other week it seemed that I was writing a press release announcing that another blue-chip recruit had committed to wrestle for coach Rob Koll and staff at Cornell University. In fact, so deep was the 2010 recruiting class that Earl Smith from D1collegewrestling.net ranked it as the #4 class in the nation…Following the finalization of such a talent class, one might make the assumption that 2011 would be a down year on the recruiting front. Nothing could be further from the truth as Cornell began its quest to turn in their third consecutive top-10 with last night’s breaking news that the #80 ranked recruit in the InterMat-100, Caleb Richardson, has given a verbal commitment to the reigning NCAA National runner-up, Big Red. 2nd Annual Diano Awards

Hey All,

It’s been a while since I last had the chance to sit at the old laptop and pound out an article for my loyal readers. Therefore, with graduate school set to resume next Tuesday, I knew that it might be long and far between before I had the opportunity to write. Hence, I decided that if I was going to fully commit to writing a piece, I might as well go big by bringing back the Annual Diano Awards. From what I recall, it was one of my more popular pieces from the 2009 season. Thus, I know that I need to give it my all if I am to match the warm responses that I received last year. I shall do my best. Continue reading “2nd Annual Diano Awards”

By George, I Think They Got Him: NHSCA Junior National Champ Verbals to Big Red

Cornell Big Red
Cornell Big Red

It was several months ago that a Cornell University insider informed me that they felt extremely confident that they would land the services of 2009 NHSCA Junior National Champion, Billy George…Yesterday, speculation became fact when the Long Branch High School senior verbally committed to wrestle for the Big Red and Head Coach, Rob Koll….The announcement that George would be Ithaca, NY bound further added to the already deep 2010 recruiting class that InterMat recently ranked as #5 following the conclusion of last month’s early signing period. Mat Side with Rob Koll – Las Vegas Invitational

Sorry it took me an extra day to get this update out. We took the redeye back and I expected to write it on the plane flight back.

Cornell Big Red

Sorry it took me an extra day to get this update out. We took the redeye back and I expected to write it on the plane flight back. Unfortunately Delta Airlines chose to play an evil joke upon me by wedging me between Damion Hahn and Taylor Moore. I attempted to reach my computer, which was under my seat, but my arms were tightly pinned to my side by Damion and Taylor’s massive girth. Taylor prides himself on his weight gain now that he has moved up to 285. Damion on the other hand still claims to be hovering around 200 lbs. This claim is accuratel; however, it is based on what he would weigh on the planet Mars. Despite terrible travel, 28 hours of travel time to get there and a redeye back, the team wrestled very well finishing a point shy of first place.

Center Circle with Mack Lewnes

After agonizing setback at the NCAA tournament in 2009, Mack Lewnes, Cornell Junior at 174lbs, is rolling through opponents like a 16lbs bowling ball scrambles pins on a strike. In early season results, he won the Las Vegas Invitational with a finals victory over 3rd ranked Stephen Dwyer of Nebraska, the Body Bar Invitational, the Binghamton Open and two dominating victories over Maryland’s formerly number 4 ranked Mike Letts.

(K)night Time: #50 Recruit/2x Iowa State Champion Headed to Cornell

 alt=

At first glance, it might have seemed like a foregone conclusion that Evan Knight, a senior at Urbandale High School in Iowa, would end up donning a cardinal and gold Iowa State singlet….After all, his father, Steve Knight, was an All-American for the Cyclones and spent three seasons on the Iowa State coaching staff. His uncle, Dan Knight, was also an All-American for the Cyclones. Three other Iowa high school seniors with Iowa State in their blood, Michael Moreno, Kyven Gadson, and Trevor Voelker, have already announced their intentions to be Cyclones.

But on Tuesday, Knight chose a different path than his father and uncle when he gave a verbal commitment to Rob Koll and the Cornell Big Red. Knight chose Cornell over Iowa State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Arizona State. He projects collegiately at 184 pounds.
