The Neverending Story: Cornell Continues to Dominate Recruiting War by Securing Verbal from 2011 #80 Caleb Richardson

Cornell Big Red

If you are an avid reader of Lighthouse, it is likely that you recall that every other week it seemed that I was writing a press release announcing that another blue-chip recruit had committed to wrestle for coach Rob Koll and staff at Cornell University. In fact, so deep was the 2010 recruiting class that Earl Smith from D1collegewrestling.net ranked it as the #4 class in the nation…Following the finalization of such a talent class, one might make the assumption that 2011 would be a down year on the recruiting front. Nothing could be further from the truth as Cornell began its quest to turn in their third consecutive top-10 with last night’s breaking news that the #80 ranked recruit in the InterMat-100, Caleb Richardson, has given a verbal commitment to the reigning NCAA National runner-up, Big Red. Loss of a Warrior: Adam Frey (1986-2009)

Good afternoon Lighthouse Wrestling readers….As many of you already know, I love being a wrestling journalist. Next to spending time with my family, having the privilege of covering all of your sons, daughters, godchildren, friends, etc in their athletic endeavors is my greatest source of joy and euphoria. It would be no understatement to say that I relish the opportunity to write 99.9 percent of the stories that I pen…Unfortunately, today is the first time that this feels like a job rather than a labor of love. This is the most difficult piece of my tenure with LHW because it is the announcement of news that I hoped that I would never have to report. It is with complete sadness in my heart and tears in my eyes that I have the burden of conveying to you that after nearly two years of the gutsiest/bravest fight I’ve ever seen, Adam Frey has lost his battle with cancer…Adam would have turned 24 in a few weeks. Blair Deja Vu: Bucs Win Beast of the East Title; Cornell Recruits Shine

Blair Bucs
Blair Academy

They say that the measure of a man is the way that he responds when things are not going his way. For Blair Academy Head Coach, Jeff Buxton and his team, it is unlikely that heading into day #2 of the Beast of the East tournament, they envisioned themselves in third place in the team standings, trailing fellow perennial powerhouses, Central Dauphin (3x Pennsylvania AAA State Champions) and Wyoming Seminary. However, rather than sulk, the Bucs refocused themselves and got down to business, putting together one of the most impressive second day efforts that I have ever seen in a tournament on either the scholastic or collegiate levels… Continue reading “Blair Deja Vu: Bucs Win Beast of the East Title; Cornell Recruits Shine”

Cornell Recruit Villalonga Leads Blair Academy to Walsh Ironman Title

Blair Bucs
Blair Academy

The last time that Blair Academy senior, Chris Villalonga, lost a folkstyle match at a big time national tournament, he was a freshman. Since then, the #3 overall recruit in the class of 2010 had gone on to win a three National Prep titles, two Walsh Ironman titles, and a pair of Beast of the East titles. Therefore, when it comes to getting it done under pressure, there are few better. It was for this reason that when faced with a 2-2 deadlock after regulation in his 140-pound finals match, the future Cornell Big Red wrestler did not look the least bit concerned… Continue reading “Cornell Recruit Villalonga Leads Blair Academy to Walsh Ironman Title”

All Victories Starts With V: #3 Recruit Villalonga Commits to Cornell

Chris Villalonga

On Tuesday evening, it was confirmed that after weeks of speculation about which Ivy League institution would land his services, Blair Academy senior, Chris Villalonga, had given a verbal commitment to continue his academic and athletic career under the guidance of Big Red head Coach, Rob Koll…This decision came just weeks after Villalonga’s Bucs teammate, #99 recruit Jesse Shanaman, also announced to attend the Ithaca, NY based campus.

With the addition of the three-time defending National Prep champion to their recruiting class, the Big Red have now successfully managed to land both the #3 and #4 recruits in the nation, having received a verbal from Marshall Peppelman (2x PA AAA State Champion) in late September…And what’s scary, is that according to Koll, the Big Red are expected to receive at least three more big name commitments in the coming weeks (per NCAA guidelines, names were not permitted to be discussed) Continue reading “All Victories Starts With V: #3 Recruit Villalonga Commits to Cornell”

Big Red Land Another: #99 Recruit Jesse Shanaman Cornell Bound

On Wednesday, InterMat broke the news that the #99 recruit in the land, Blair Academy’s Jesse Shanaman, had given a verbal commitment to Cornell University Head Coach, Rob Koll and his staff…In doing so, Shanaman become the second Bucs wrestler in the past week and a half to formally announce his collegiate plans. On October 4th, 2009 National Prep Champion, Max Huntley (who will wrestle on the Blair College team in 2010) revealed that he would continue his wrestling career at Missouri under the tutelage of Brian Smith….Remaining uncommitted from Jeff Buxton’s returning National Championship team are a pair of top-15 recruits in the persons of #3 Chris Villalonga (also rumored to be heavily considering Cornell) and #12 Mike Evans (a 2010 transfer who is believed to be down to a short list consisting of the University of Iowa and the aforementioned University of Missouri).
