Mat Side With Rob Koll – The Scuffle

It has been a while since my last musings, but that does not mean nothing has been happening in the Cornell wrestling world. As a matter of fact, we have been very busy and I am slightly surprised and disappointed that I have not heard many complaints about my silence.

Rob Koll 2010 EIWA

It has been a while since my last musings, but that does not mean nothing has been happening in the Cornell wrestling world. As a matter of fact, we have been very busy and I am slightly surprised and disappointed that I have not heard many complaints about my silence. I can only surmise this means no one reads my ramblings or those who do are enjoying the break. For better or worse, however, I am back and here is the update.

EIWA weekly review: Midseason Report Card

We are halfway through the 2010-11 season and the EIWA has seen its ups and downs. Some schools sputtered out of the gates while others soared. And that one Ivy League program in upstate New York just continues to go about its business, despite the target marked “No. 1” on its back. It is time to break down the conference school by school to see how each team fared in the early going.

Do You Believe? CHSAA Poised For Breakout 2011 Season

“If you don’t believe, than you don’t belong.” So are the words that adorn the homepage of the St. Anthony’s High School wrestling website. The concept of belief in one’s self is a trademark in the wrestling room of the South Huntington based perennial Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) powerhouse. However, in all honesty, it is a slogan that could easily be applied to the league as a whole. Fresh off of a 2010 campaign that witnessed the Catholic boys put forth their best collective performance in my lifetime (finishing sixth in the overall team standings behind six place-winners, three finalists, and a State Champion), the CHSAA is primed and ready to not only match last season’s efforts, but surpass it on all accounts. With seven individual Catholic State Champions/NYS Qualifiers back from last season, the talent is certainly there to make this year one for the record books. And, who better to lead this charge than the young men who inspired our theme, the defending champion Friars of STA. Continue reading “Do You Believe? CHSAA Poised For Breakout 2011 Season”

On the campus of Northwestern University, the EIWA put together an admirable performance at the 2010 Midlands Championships. The conference placed a total of 13 wrestlers, including tournament champions at 149 pounds and heavyweight.

At 125, the lone EIWA representative on the podium came in the form of Rutgers’ Matt Fusco. The sophomore rebounded after an opening round loss to reel off four wins in a row in the wrestlebacks. Fusco upset seventh-seeded Steven Keith of Harvard on his way to an eighth place finish. Continue reading “EIWA weekly review: Conference places 13 at Midlands”

Gain Explosive Power with BAND Training

Adding bands to barbell training is another great way to develop both power and strength. Adding bands to your training is one of the best methods to develop bar speed and overcome sticking points. In this article we will discuss other applications of the Dynamic and Max Effort methods discussed in the chain series.

Training with Bands for Power

By John Gaglione

The last few weeks we discussed how chains can be applied to barbell and body weight exercises for both power and strength.

There are many applications to using bands when training. They can be used for a number of different exercises for building strength as well as for injury prevention. The bands we recommend for the applications used in this article can be purchased through Elite Fitness Systems. It is important when performing these advanced exercises to use a proper band to minimize any chance of injury. Using a lesser quality band can be very dangerous. Other good brands of bands include Iron Woody and Jump stretch. Continue reading “Gain Explosive Power with BAND Training”

EIWA weekly review: Lehigh topples No. 19 Central Michigan

Over half of the EIWA was in action this past weekend and while six of the seven schools won at least one dual in that span, none were more impressive than No. 11 Lehigh’s 23-9 trouncing of visiting No. 19 Central Michigan on Dec. 12.

The Mountain Hawks brought Leeman-Turner Arena to its feet and made a statement, taking seven of ten bouts from the Chippewas, including the only two major decisions of the day.

Lehigh took three straight in the middleweights, highlighted by Brian Tanen’s 9-1 major over Adam Miller at 157 pounds with the match tied at six apiece. The Mountain Hawks never looked back from that four-point lead and only dropped one more match on the day, reeling off three straight wins again to finish out the dual.
