It has been awhile since I last wrote, but that does not mean that nothing has been going on in the world of Big Red wrestling. We had to replace two assistant coaches as Cory Cooperman and Travis Lee have moved on. Cory accepted a coaching position closer to home at Rutgers, while Travis has decided to move to California to pursue a career in the biotechnology field. Cory has been a wonderful member of our Cornell wrestling family over the past three years, and he will undoubtedly make a significant impact with the Scarlet Knights.

The Friends of Massapequa Wrestling hosted a clinic with Olympic Champion Henry Cejuod at Massapequa High School on Saturday that was well attended by the local wrestling community. The Friends of Massapequa Wrestling invited Lighthouse Wrestling and The Mat Slap to record an interview with Henry Cejudo. Jim Nordland hosted a great interview with Henry. Thanks to the Friends of Massapequa Wrestling, Jim Nordland for some great questions, and to Henry Cejudo for making this possible.

Night time is the right time for a summer wrestling tournament. Six Divisions - Intermediate, Novice, Schoolboy, Cadet, Junior and Senior (Open). Takedown tournament in a round robin format. Total cumulative takedowns against all opponents determines placing. Each takedown is scored as one point. Wrestlers will be put back up in the neutral position on their feet immediately following each takedown scored. Wrestling will take place outside at night under the lights on 4 mats set up on the astro turf football field at John Burns Park.

This past weekend (June 13th), former Baldwin High School, Nassau Community College, and Hofstra University great, Chris Weidman won the Middleweight title at the 2009 Abu Dhabi Combat Club East Coast trials. By virtue of his submission victory (via anaconda choke) over James Brasco, the Serra BJJ representative officially punched his own ticket to the ADCC World Championship Tournament, to be contested in Barcelona, Spain on September 26th-27th. On Tuesday afternoon, the Hofstra University athletic office released the schedule for the upcoming ‘09-’10 varsity wrestling season…Highlighting this series of matches/tournaments will be road trips to Albany, NY for the Northeast Duals (vs. Virginia, Northern Colorado, and Nebraska—November 28th), Primm, NV for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (December 4th-5th), Greensboro, NC for the Southern Scuffle (December 29th-30th), Fairfax, VA for the annual CAA Duals (vs. Sacred Heart, George Mason, Boston University, and Old Dominion—January 16th), as well as journeys to Ithaca, NY and College Park, MD for duals against Cornell University (February 6th)  and the University of Maryland (February 14th)….The Colonial Athletic Association conference tournament will be contested On the campus of Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ on March 5th & 6th….The NCAA tournament will be held March 18th-20th at the QWest Center in Omaha, Nebraska.  Read the full story »

Back in late April LHW was pleased to announce that the then new Head Coach of Penn State, Cael Sanderson, had successfully landed two of the Keystone State’s top members of the class of 2010, the Alton twins. At that time, it was strongly believed that several of the incoming recruits that Sanderson had signed while at Iowa State would inevitably elect to follow him to University Park. A top that list was the consensus #1 recruit in the nation, St. Paris Graham’s (OH) David Taylor. This morning, after taking a few weeks to fully re-evaluate all of his options, the four-time State Champion made it official when he announced that he would indeed continue his education and wrestling career under the guidance of Sanderson as a member of the Nittany Lion class of 2013.

Sayville Wrestling club netted and astounding 7 top 3 place finishers in the New York State Schoolboy State Championships (Freestyle & Greco Roman) with Matt Leshinger, 8th grade, crowned Schoolboy State Champion in Greco Roman and Third in Freestyle. Freestyle finalist, Zach Meyer, took home the sliver for Sayville while the remaining competitors took home very respectable bronz medals.
