After the Iowa State dual meet at the Newman Center on January 31, Lighthouse Wrestling sat with Cornell Head Coach Rob Koll, 3x All-American Troy Nickerson, and freshman standout, Kyle Dake for a brief interview.
Coverage details of Iowa State wrestling at Cornell on January 31st at 1PM.
Cornell had a full weekend of wrestling with Lehigh on Friday evening and the New York Intercollegiate Championships all day Saturday and Sunday. We tied #8 Lehigh 15-15 and won the NY States, crowning five champions.
Cornell head coach gives his mid term report on the Big Red Wrestling team with an in depth analysis of each weight class.
They practice scrambling at Cornell; this is a certainty. If the finals of the 2009 Southern Scuffle on the campus of UNC-Greensboro taught us nothing else, it is that Big Red wrestlers have made an art out of countering their opponents’ offensive attacks and utilizing their scrambling ability to remain in control of matches at [...]
Great day of duals for the B-cats yesterday, as we went 3-0 to extend our record to 7-2. The guys have all shown flashes of brilliance 1st semester, and it was nice to be able to showcase our skills in front of former Coach Steve Erber as well as prominent alumnus Billy Baldwin. 7-2 with our lone dual losses coming against traditional powers Nebraska and Michigan State is no small feat- and we still feel that our best wrestling is ahead of us this year.
Sorry it took me an extra day to get this update out. We took the redeye back and I expected to write it on the plane flight back.
Yesterday, the Bearcats kept up with the early season grind, heading to Penn State to take on some of the best wrestlers in the NE. The team continues to show improvement as hard work is paying off for many young Bearcats.
Your BU Bearcats were in action yesterday at the prestigious North East Duals held in Troy, NY. This event attracts many of the best teams in all the land, and boasts to be “the best wrestling east of the Mississippi.”
The first two weeks of the season brought many success for the Bearcats. It also showed growing pains associated with having a young lineup.
As the calendar hits mid-November, three certainties await the fanatical wrestling fan…First, the college season is now underway and will absorb the majority of your free time for the next five months; Second, Thanksgiving will probably be the last time you are allowed to hit as much as you want without feeling guilty about hunger [...]
While a team can place highly at the NCAA championships on the strength of a handful of qualifiers, as Maryland demonstrated last season by placing 10th with four, to break the top 10 in dual meets a team must have an outstanding wrestler at every weight. And unlike tournament success, dual meet success mostly falls on the shoulders of the faces who will debut this season.
As the 2009-2010 wrestling season approaches, teams are planning and strategizing how they can improve upon last season’s performance, break into the top ten, or even vie for a title. But as Helmuth Von Moltke, a 19th century Prussian Field Marshall, is famed for saying, “no battle plan survives contact with the enemy.” While each team develops and works their plan, for sure their fierce competitors will have something to say about it.
Marshall Peppelman was in seventh grade when he first started attending Rob Koll’s Cornell wrestling camps in the summer with his teammates. His team attended the camp every summer and Peppelman’s relationship grew with Koll as did his admiration for the Cornell wrestling program. But it wasn’t until Peppelman started looking at colleges when he [...]
The summer has passed by all too quickly, and the entire team has returned to Ithaca. We had a productive summer, and I am ecstatic to have everyone back. Actually this comes as no surprise to me since we had plus or minus 20 wrestlers training in Ithaca for all or part of the entire summer.
It has been awhile since I last wrote, but that does not mean that nothing has been going on in the world of Big Red wrestling. We had to replace two assistant coaches as Cory Cooperman and Travis Lee have moved on. Cory accepted a coaching position closer to home at Rutgers, while Travis has decided to move to California to pursue a career in the biotechnology field. Cory has been a wonderful member of our Cornell wrestling family over the past three years, and he will undoubtedly make a significant impact with the Scarlet Knights.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Hofstra University athletic office released the schedule for the upcoming ’09-’10 varsity wrestling season…Highlighting this series of matches/tournaments will be road trips to Albany, NY for the Northeast Duals (vs. Virginia, Northern Colorado, and Nebraska—November 28th), Primm, NV for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (December 4th-5th), Greensboro, NC for the Southern Scuffle [...]
Unfortunately we came up short on our goal of a national championship. However, I was extremely proud of the team’s performance in general. We demonstrated to the wrestling community that Cornell is a serious contender and not just a “flash in the pan”. As long as we continue to bring in quality young man and work hard and smart we have teams that will challenge for title. It may take some time, but we will eventually reach our goal of a national championship!
By now all of you know that we won our third straight EIWA title. If anyone reading this is not aware of that fact, then shame on you and go back to watching NCAA basketball! On with my recap.
The EIWA tournament is finally upon us. I hope to see a large and boisterous pack of Cornell fans on Saturday and Sunday. Here is complete schedule of the weekend’s events.
This is Steve Anceravage and I will be writing Coach Kolls weekly update. On the bus trip home from Boston I was trying to get a sneak peak of what coach was writing about me. He got tired of me reading over his shoulder and decided to let, or should I say, make me write it.
It was great to see so many friends come out on Sunday for the Penn match. Sunday also marked our seniors final home competition. This year’s seniors include: Steve Anceravage, Drake Hovis, Zach Hammond, Tim Ironman and Jordan Leen. We wrestled in the always Cornell friendly confines of the Friedman Wrestling Center. If you have never been to a match at the Friedman Center you are missing out on one of the country’s great wrestling experiences. The sold-out gym is hot, cramped, and loud; a true wrestlers paradise!
