Make It A Double: Journeymen Wrestling Club Presents 2010 Northeast Duals

Last week, Lighthouse Wrestling was proud to promote the Sprawl & Brawl Duals, organized by the Journeymen Wrestling Club, under the leadership of Frankie Popolizio. However, as deep in talent as that event is, the 2010 Northeast Duals, also sponsored by the JWC, might just be the best accumulation of talent in one place at one time this early into the 2010/2011 season…With a field consisting of seven of the nation’s top 25 teams (13 of the top 50), LHW and Journeymen have one suggestion for you, MAKE IT A DOUBLE, by being in attendance for both of the JWC’s premier events. Wrestlings Biggest Challenge

Since the late 1970’s wrestling has been taking a “big” hit in regard to the losses of hundreds of collegiate wrestling programs that has also impacted our world and Olympic effort.

Obviously the ripple down effect has reduced the HS numbers as well. The number of participants have been decreasing each year. Wrestling in 1978, had over 330,000 HS wrestlers with 9800 teams with over 600 college teams in the NJCAA, NAIA and the NCAA.

We now have 230,000 wrestlers in 10,000 high schools. The colleges are fighting for survival and the world level athletes have no resources to compete globally.

The challenge for all sports is at the support level. Colleges and even high school administrators, look at one very important component when faced in a financial crisis in respect to their budgets.

How many people are we attracting to our Duals & Games?

What wrestling needs more than wrestlers is MORE FANS. The more fans attending & supporting wrestling at the HS and College level the more kids will give wrestling a chance while providing the resources to expand the sport.

KICK-OFF for 2010-11 Wrestling Season

Russia VS USA

1972- USA VS. Soviet National Team at Hofstra- 10,000 fans
1986- Soviet Union vs. USA at Nassau CC- 5,000 fans and CBS Sports national television 1 hour show.
2010- USA vs. Russia at Hofstra Arena- Can we fill the place?

No matter which Russians come they are loaded with 2-3 World and Olympic Champions at every weight class. They are the best technicians in the world…..USA are “fighters” and hard workers who can compete with anyone in the world.

Be There

When? Friday, November 19

Tis the Season: Journeymen Sprawl & Brawl Highlights Start of ’10-’11 College Season

Scott Green, the legendary New York State Junior Coach, as well a former assistant coach at Binghamton University and the current head coach at prep powerhouse Wyoming Seminary, recently made the comment on his facebook profile that it is starting to “smell like wrestling season.” For many enthusiasts, with matches officially kicking off this past weekend, this is a statement that is abundant with veritas and intensity. However, while I acknowledge the importance of all matches, for me, the start of the college season is always marked by the first of Frankie Popolizio and Journeymen Wrestling Club’s two mega-events; 2010/2011 is no different as I, along with a plethora of fans located in the Northeast, anxiously await the calendar hitting November 21st, the date of the JWC’s annual Sprawl and Brawl Duals….Hosted by the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions, Binghamton University, this year’s field is highlighted by the participation of teams such as Penn State University, Harvard University, Rutgers, Michigan State University, and West Virginia, as well as the aforementioned Bearcats. Who Will Earn the Crown at the UE Duals?

On January 2nd, 13 ambitious teams from around New York State will make the trip to Union-Endicott to compete in New York’s most competitive dual meet tournament. Often the tournament champion is selected by the New York State Sports Writers Association (NYSSWA) as the number one team in the state. Though they use many events in their final selection, it is the keystone event in their analysis.

Journeymen Wrestling Presents Mega Events: Sprawl & Brawl (Nov. 22); Northeast Duals (Nov. 28th)

As the calendar hits mid-November, three certainties await the fanatical wrestling fan…First, the college season is now underway and will absorb the majority of your free time for the next five months; Second, Thanksgiving will probably be the last time you are allowed to hit as much as you want without feeling guilty about hunger pains to your friend, child, neighbor, etc. (yes wrestlers, we see the dirty looks you give us when we pig out in front of you); and finally, we are only weeks away from two of the premier early season collegiate events, the Sprawl and Brawl and Northeast Duals, both presented by Frank Popolizio and the Journeymen Wrestling Club.
