On January 2nd, 13 ambitious teams from around New York State will make the trip to Union-Endicott to compete in New York’s most competitive dual meet tournament. Often the tournament champion is selected by the New York State Sports Writers Association (NYSSWA) as the number one team in the state. Though they use many events in their final selection, it is the keystone event in their analysis.

Friday Night Lights was a smashing success at Johns Burns Park in Massapequa on Friday Evening July 10. Unlike the tension at other wrestling touraments, Friday Nigh Lights was a combination festival, reunion, wrestling tournament rolled into one. Contrasted with a baseball game in progress on the adjacent field, it was on the mat where you could find all the excitement and fans, not so much for America’s favorite past time. A battle tested Sayville Wrestling club continue the Spring march at the Northeast Regional – Freestyle & Greco Roman Championships (Kids & Cadet) at Broom County Community College. The Golden Flashes earn 8 top 4 medals at the Northeast Regional Championship.
Sayville Wrestling club netted and astounding 7 top 3 place finishers in the New York State Schoolboy State Championships (Freestyle & Greco Roman) with Matt Leshinger, 8th grade, crowned Schoolboy State Champion in Greco Roman and Third in Freestyle. Freestyle finalist, Zach Meyer, took home the sliver for Sayville while the remaining competitors took home very respectable bronz medals.

Section XI resumed its state domination this weekend after a three year respite as they took the 2009 New York State DI Championship Sectional Title outscoring, the second place section, Section II by a score of 237.5 to 191. Winning six Sectional Championships in the decade of the millennium, finishing second twice, and third and forth once, Section XI is once more New York State’s section of the decade. Congratulations Section XI on another outstanding season of wrestling.

Based upon the section winners and alternate qualifier lists by weight released today, here is a weight-by-weight preview of the NYPHSAA wrestling championships this weekend. Once the final seeds are determined and tournament charts by weight are released we will release our state finalist picks for each weight. Our sectional champion pick is already determined as section 11 – Suffolk County. The depth within this section this year seems to be insurmountable. Sections 2 and 9 should be competitive in Albany this year followed by sections 8, 1, 4 and 6.
