Do You Believe? CHSAA Poised For Breakout 2011 Season

“If you don’t believe, than you don’t belong.” So are the words that adorn the homepage of the St. Anthony’s High School wrestling website. The concept of belief in one’s self is a trademark in the wrestling room of the South Huntington based perennial Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) powerhouse. However, in all honesty, it is a slogan that could easily be applied to the league as a whole. Fresh off of a 2010 campaign that witnessed the Catholic boys put forth their best collective performance in my lifetime (finishing sixth in the overall team standings behind six place-winners, three finalists, and a State Champion), the CHSAA is primed and ready to not only match last season’s efforts, but surpass it on all accounts. With seven individual Catholic State Champions/NYS Qualifiers back from last season, the talent is certainly there to make this year one for the record books. And, who better to lead this charge than the young men who inspired our theme, the defending champion Friars of STA. Continue reading “Do You Believe? CHSAA Poised For Breakout 2011 Season”

The (Wild) Cats’ Meow: 3x NYS Finalist/’09 Champion Greene Verbals to Northwestern

Northwestern

Those of you who have followed my writings from local message board icon (kidding, of course) to freelance wrestling journalist know that I have always had a special place in my heart for the New York State Catholic League. It was the place of origin of my now well established affinity for the world’s oldest and greatest sport (to borrow from one of my literary heroes, Mike Chapman). Therefore, it is no understatement to say that I take immense pride and satisfaction when learning that one of its student-athletes has “done good”. For this reason, last night took on great significance to me when I was informed that the league’s brightest star, 3x NYS finalist/2009 NYS DI Champion, Grant Greene, of St. Anthony’s High School, had given a verbal commitment to compete for Coach Drew Pariano as a part of the class of 2015 at Northwestern University. Greene, who will be named to the top-10 seniors list when the New York installment of the Wrestling-49 series is released at a future date, becomes the first rising senior from the recruiting class of 2011 to formally announce his intentions to continue his academic and athletic pursuits at the Evanston, IL based institution of higher learning. Super Seven: Friars Win CHSAA State Crown Behind Plethora of Champions

On Monday, February 15th, the Friars of St. Anthony’s High School put the finishing touches on what has been an unblemished season for the ages for the South Huntington based school, completing the triple crown (Dual Meet, League title, Catholic State) behind the individual efforts of seven champions. In doing so, the Toni Walters led team, which last won the CHSAA State title in 2002, dethroned the defending team champions, Monsignor Farrell, outscoring the Lions 286.5 to 225.5 to bring the hardware back to Long Island where it had been a mainstay prior to last season. 2010 CHSAA State Tournament Preview

Last season, Monsignor Farrell did something that no other team had managed to do in the past six years, unseat Chaminade High School atop the Catholic High School latter.  With several of the key members of the Lions’ championship team back in 2010, the question of the hour is, will the Staten Island based school be able to pull off a repeat performance of last season’s feat?  With either the  top or second seeded wrestler at eight of the 15 weight classes that will contested this weekend, if you are a Farrell fan, you have to like your chances…Expected to shine for the perennial NYC powerhouse are returning Champions, Tony Carlo (145) and Ben Villaret (152).  Top-seeded Vin Fischetti (125), Joe Francolino (130), along with #2 seeds Chris Amendola (96), Paul DiStefano (103), Marc Pirozzi (119), and Tim McCann (135) should also be big point earners for the returning champs.   Continue reading “2010 CHSAA State Tournament Preview”

CHSAA Preview: Friars Poised to Regain Crown For First Time Since 2002

The 2009 New York State Catholic High School wrestling season was one that was marked by the return to the top of Monsignor Farrell High School. After nearly 20 years of watching as other Christian institutions had their days in the sun and hoisted the championship hardware, the team trophy was finally headed back to Staten Island, a location that Lion coaches Lou DeStefano, Rob Pavis, Anthony Anastasio, Phil Squatrito, Pete Hamm, Jason Bross, etc. hope to keep it for the unforeseeable future….One primary opponent standing in the way of a Farrell dynasty is the Friars from St. Anthony’s High School. Much like their rivals accomplished last season, the Friars, led by coaches Antoni Walters and Keith Eckert, will be hungry and determined to regain their spot atop the proverbial mountain, a position that the Huntington, NY based high school has not enjoyed winning back-to-back team titles in 2001 & 2002… Continue reading “CHSAA Preview: Friars Poised to Regain Crown For First Time Since 2002”

King of the City: Farrell’s Villaret Becomes Winningest Wrestler in NYC History

Since the beginning of time, coaches have been repeating to their athletes cliche phrases such as “hard work pays off”, “no pain, no gain”, “don’t rest on your laurels” as well as a plethora of other famous sports sayings…On December 19th of this year, Monsignor Farrell senior, Ben Villaret, changed the aforementioned from empty words into action when he pinned Salesian’s Nick Terp with 13 seconds remaining in the opening period to claim his 148th career victory, making him the all-time career wins leader in New York City. The Lion captain had tied record of Petrides’s Brian Traub (2006-2009), early in the day with a 9-0 major decision over Eric Benito of Fordham Prep….As of this past Tuesday, the new record has grown to the 150 win mark, thanks to Villaret’s pin of Sachem East’s Frank Merante….With still plenty of season left to wrestle, the 2x defending Catholic State Champion finds himself in a good position to break the CHSAA career wins mark of 178, set by former St. Anthony’s and University of Iowa wrestler, Lucas Magnani (1999-2002 @ St. Anthony’s). Earth-Quake(r): Fordham Prep’s 2008 NYS Champion Lenzi Verbals to UPenn

Wednesday evening, right around the time that the New York Yankees were surging to a 2-0 game 6 lead by virtue of a Hideki Matsui homerun, Lighthouse Wrestling was in the process of getting it confirmed that 2x defending CHSAA Catholic State/2008 NYS DI Champion, Andrew Lenzi, had indeed officially come off of the market….Responding to a facebook message left for him, the two-time NYS finalist confirmed that earlier in the evening, he had contacted the University of Pennsylvania’s Head Wrestling Coach, Rob Eiter, to inform him that he had decided to make the Philadelphia based campus his home away from home for the next four years (commencing in the Fall of 2010)….Lenzi becomes the first recruit from the current senior class to formally announce his intentions to join the Qakers.  Continue reading “Earth-Quake(r): Fordham Prep’s 2008 NYS Champion Lenzi Verbals to UPenn”

Farrell Wins First CHSAA State Crown Since 1990; 5 Champions Repeat

As I rode upstate to Athol Springs, NY with Monsignor Farrell Assistant Coach, Jason Bross, I was told the story of how the Lions’ coaching staff assembled one day approximately four years ago and looked to the future. With a talented, but still raw group of freshmen staring them in the face, the MF brain trust knew that the day was near that the Staten Island based school would again claim the hardware

msgrfarrelAs I rode upstate to Athol Springs, NY with Monsignor Farrell Assistant Coach, Jason Bross, I was told the story of how the Lions’ coaching staff assembled one day approximately four years ago and looked to the future.  With a talented, but still raw group of freshmen staring them in the face, the MF brain trust knew that the day was near that the Staten Island based school would again claim the hardware that had eluded them for nearly two decades.  A lot of insiders felt that 2008 would be the year that the Lions returned to the top of the hill.  However, having been left without the services of senior leader, Rich Benigno, due to unfortunate circumstances, the Lou DeStefano led Lions had to watch as Chaminade High School claimed their sixth consecutive Catholic State Crown. Since that day, every hour, minute, and second of the past year has been focused on one common goal, to win it all in 2009.  With a core group of four returning champions, and six additional CHSAA State placewinners returning from last year’s runner-up squad, it there was ever a time to believe that the CHSAA State crown was S.I. bounded, it was now….

And today, at a little past 6pm, belief turned itself in reality.  Led by five champions and four runners-up Monsignor Farrell had finally earned the right to call themselves the best Catholic league wrestling team in New York State.   The blood, sweat, tears, etc endured over the last 365 has yielded a gold mine.  And in this gold mine, was a community of parents, coaches, and overall friends of the program that were brought to outbursts of tears as they watched their boys realize their collective dreams.
