Mat Side with Rob Koll: Season Recap December 9th

We have made it through the first half of the season with our record unblemished and I am excited for what awaits us in the second semester. Considering our wrestlers are getting ready for finals, I feel it is an appropriate time to give them performance evaluations as well.

Mat Side with Rob Koll – NCAA Analysis and Interview with Scott Casber

I’m back from Omaha and still riding a high from the weekend. Every wrestler wrestled well whether in victory or defeat. I am so honored to be a part of the greatest NCAA tournament performance in Cornell wrestling history.

Mat Side with Rob Koll – Weekend Review 10-08

Rob Koll recaps the Big Red’s weekend performance against Penn and Princeton.

It was a great weekend for the guys. Everyone wrestled well and I am very happy with where we are at this point in the season. Obviously the competition is not as tough as it has been in the past but I still get nervous whenever we wrestle Penn at Penn. We used to have some very tough battles in the Palestra so it is nice to dominate the Quakers on their home turf. Continue reading “Mat Side with Rob Koll – Weekend Review 10-08”

Mat Side with Rob Koll – Weekend Observations 10-07

Now that we have wrestled through the most rigorous portion of the season it is nice to have a few “lighter” matches leading up the EIWA tournament. Out of twenty matches wrestled, we had only one wrestler lose a match.

Now that we have wrestled through the most rigorous portion of the season it is nice to have a few “lighter” matches leading up the EIWA tournament. Out of twenty matches wrestled, we had only one wrestler lose a match. Unfortunately that same wrestler, John Basting, not only lost a match but suffered an injury in his final bout. I am not sure when he will return to the mats.

Mat Side with Rob Koll – Las Vegas Invitational

Sorry it took me an extra day to get this update out. We took the redeye back and I expected to write it on the plane flight back.

Sorry it took me an extra day to get this update out. We took the redeye back and I expected to write it on the plane flight back. Unfortunately Delta Airlines chose to play an evil joke upon me by wedging me between Damion Hahn and Taylor Moore. I attempted to reach my computer, which was under my seat, but my arms were tightly pinned to my side by Damion and Taylor’s massive girth. Taylor prides himself on his weight gain now that he has moved up to 285. Damion on the other hand still claims to be hovering around 200 lbs. This claim is accuratel; however, it is based on what he would weigh on the planet Mars. Despite terrible travel, 28 hours of travel time to get there and a redeye back, the team wrestled very well finishing a point shy of first place.

Mat Side with Rob Koll – Maryland Dual Meet Analysis

I was going to put this off until after the Body Bar but l figured I might as well get it over with. We lost a heartbreaker tonight. There were some absolutely amazing performances and an equal number of less than stellar performances. I will start with the positives.

Matside with Rob Koll: 2009-10 Season Preview

The summer has passed by all too quickly, and the entire team has returned to Ithaca. We had a productive summer, and I am ecstatic to have everyone back. Actually this comes as no surprise to me since we had plus or minus 20 wrestlers training in Ithaca for all or part of the entire summer.

Mat Side with Rob Koll

It has been awhile since I last wrote, but that does not mean that nothing has been going on in the world of Big Red wrestling. We had to replace two assistant coaches as Cory Cooperman and Travis Lee have moved on. Cory accepted a coaching position closer to home at Rutgers, while Travis has decided to move to California to pursue a career in the biotechnology field. Cory has been a wonderful member of our Cornell wrestling family over the past three years, and he will undoubtedly make a significant impact with the Scarlet Knights.

This Week at Cornell with Rob Koll 13-09

Unfortunately we came up short on our goal of a national championship. However, I was extremely proud of the team’s performance in general. We demonstrated to the wrestling community that Cornell is a serious contender and not just a “flash in the pan”. As long as we continue to bring in quality young man and work hard and smart we have teams that will challenge for title. It may take some time, but we will eventually reach our goal of a national championship!

cornellbigredHello all, we could not get back to Ithaca until Tuesday, thus the delay in my NCAA update.  I actually tried to send it out from my hotel room but my list-serve would not work from that location.  I am sure someone with a modicum of intelligence could figure out how to make it work but I am not that guy.

Each year our Cornell “C” of red continues to grow.  Special thanks to Chris and Ken Griffin for their help with producing the shirts as well as to Gene Nighman for distributing them. At one point “Gypsy Gene” looked like a New York City street vender as he turned the Hyatt lobby into the Cornell shirt distribution center.  I don’t believe the hotel could complain too much consider we booked over one hundred rooms per night at their residence. Unfortunately our current wrestlers choose to stay elsewhere because the Hyatt would not accommodate their request for one room with twenty additional cots. This Week at Cornell with Rob Koll 11-09

By now all of you know that we won our third straight EIWA title. If anyone reading this is not aware of that fact, then shame on you and go back to watching NCAA basketball! On with my recap.

cornellbigredBy now all of you know that we won our third straight EIWA title. If anyone reading this is not aware of that fact, then shame on you and go back to watching NCAA basketball! On with my recap.

I was pleased with the team’s performance from top to bottom. As I expected every guy wrestled with spirt and pride. When we lost a match we were inevitably the aggressor. Every wrestler placed up to or above their seed and the element that I am most proud of is that we did not take a single injury time-out. This is so important to me because this statistic is representative of the nature and personality of our team. This group of young men are just plain physically and mentally tough. One reason I am confident that we will do well next week at the NCAA tournament is because this charachteristic is necessary to excel in the post season. We also have a history of performing well in the post season and I see every indication that this trend will continue. Continue reading “This Week at Cornell with Rob Koll 11-09”

This Week at Cornell with Rob Koll, 07-09

It was great to see so many friends come out on Sunday for the Penn match. Sunday also marked our seniors final home competition. This year’s seniors include: Steve Anceravage, Drake Hovis, Zach Hammond, Tim Ironman and Jordan Leen. We wrestled in the always Cornell friendly confines of the Friedman Wrestling Center. If you have never been to a match at the Friedman Center you are missing out on one of the country’s great wrestling experiences. The sold-out gym is hot, cramped, and loud; a true wrestlers paradise!
