Going into our third season at Lighthouse Wrestling, I’m quite excited for the upcoming year.  Since the end of the first season, I’ve been busy working to have additional contributors to the site.  It’s not easy.  To put it succinctly, few contributors will write for the love of it, even less will continue for any length of time.   However, I’m happy to say that a number of good people have offered to contribute in 2010/2011, and I’m hopeful they will deliver. Is It Time for Change?

It wouldn’t be summer if we weren’t debating the differences in play today versus the Golden Era of wrestling in New York State: the ‘70s. Yeah, I hate to do it. It’s the summer. What else is there to do than stir it up? A lot changed since.

Here’s your chance to test your skills against the Lighthouse rankers.  Submit your top 25 Section XI and Section VIII tournament rankings by September 15th, 2010.  The winner will receive a $50 cash prize.

Contest Rules

  • Must rank top 25 tournament teams for each in section VIII and XI.  The top 25 rank should only have teams of the same section identified.  Ranking less than 25 teams in each section disqualifies the entry.
  • Only residents of Section XI and Section VIII are eligible to compete.
  • Must include your name and address with the submission and allow your name to be published along with your ranking.
  • All submissions will be published on the Lighthouse site with the entrants first and last name.
  • Submissions compete against the Lighthouse pre-season rankings.  You must beat the Lighthouse ranking to win.
  • Submissions are scored against the final team standings in Section XI and Section VIII for 2011.
  • One point is awarded when a team in your rank is 5 or less positions away from the final team standing in the 2011 section championships.
  • In the event of a tie, whoever has the most 4 or less, then 3 or less, then 2 or less, then 1 or less, then 0 positions away from the final standing wins.  If still tied, the tied entries are put in a hat and randomly picked.   For example, if A and B are tied with 10 less than 5 positions away and if A has 9 less than 4 positions away and B has 8 less than 4 positions away, then A wins.  If not, this continues until a winner is identified.
  • Submissions must be received by midnight on September 15th 2010.
  • Send submissions to webmaster[at]lighthousewrestling[dot]com
  • Winner will be announced on April 15th 2011.

A Fair Ranking

All champions know whether the rankings flatter or overlook them, their destiny is in their hands. Your destiny is in your hands when you believe your dream is possible.

Henry Cejudo, Olympic Champion

The wrestling community anticipates a ranking release with as much excitement and anguish as a winter storm. You can feel the longing in the forums when too much time elapses since the last release. Threads form with ad hoc rankings, debates ensue, and the fans nag the webmaster for taking so long like chirping chicks squeaking for their next meal. Then, it arrives more debates ensue, ad hoc rankings form, and some deride the rankers for being so wrong. Continue reading “A Fair Ranking”

2nd Annual Friday Night Lights Rocked

The Friends of Massapequa wrestling held a very successful 2nd annual Friday Night Lights tournament. Athletes from near and far, from yesteryear to this year participated in a festive tournament where winning was secondary to oiling up the joints, trying out some new moves, and meeting up with old friends.

When I first arrived at John Burns park, the DJ was spinning Spirit in the Sky while pee-wee wrestlers were competing and the older divisions were registering athletes. It’s a song I remember from my youth, and when I left the park, it’s been replaying in my head since. Continue reading “2nd Annual Friday Night Lights Rocked”
