In a Suffolk County League III match, Smithtown East defeated West Islip 33-31 on January 28, 2011 to win the league title in thrilling match on Senior Night at Smithtown East High School. Prior to the match, the Smithtown East coaches honored their graduating seniors, Nick Galante, Tim Kopiske, Pat Falk, Scott Price, Don Riordan and Dan Burns with a trophy and photograph.
The victory was only decided in the last match of the evening as the winner would emerge as the League III dual meet champion. The action began at the first and now mandatory weight of 96 with West Islip Lion junior Travis Isgro running up a quick point lead to a pin over Bull freshman Darius Caparuso to give West Islip the lead by 6.
Bull sophomore Steven Bair halved the lead with a 5-0 decision over West Islip freshman Drew Forcina. Lion sophomore Tyler Walsh pinned Bull sophomore Justin Burns to increase the West Islip lead to 12-3.
At 119 Bull senior Dan Burns capped off his dual meet career with a pin over West Islip junior captain Nick Gennaro to pull the Bulls closer at 12-9. Lion junior Will Graham held off Bull sophomore Tylar Vigliarolo, 4-2 to make the match score 15-9 in favor of West Islip.
At 130, West Islip senior and league place winner Matt Donovan earned a major decision but could not pin Smithtown East senior Don Riordan to increase the Lion lead to 10 at 19-9.
At 135, Bull all league junior and four year starter Luke Outcault outwrestled his senior counterpart captain Steven Coppola, 6-3 to pull the Bulls closer at 19-12. Bull junior Eric Binder earned a rare points decision over West Islip captain Joe Byrne, 5-2 to edge the Bulls closer at 19-15. Bull junior and league placewinner Casey O’Malley pinned Lion senior Matt Sullivan in the first period to give Smithtown East its first lead of the night, 21-19.
Junior league placewinner Anthony Forca at 152 from Smithtown East ran up 10 points versus 4 for freshman Nick Morillo to put the Bulls out in front 24-19. At 160, all league Bull junior Nick Oliveri took down, gave up and escape and reversed Lion senior JP Cassagnau and won a 5- 2 decision to increase the Bulls lead to 27-19. Junior Lion league placewinner Pat Ryan faced off against Smithtown East senior placewinner Pat Falk at 171.
The action was rough drawing penalty points from both wrestlers. Ryan was ahead by 2 point with a few seconds remaining and caught Falk and earned a pin to make the score 27-26 for the Bulls, but penalty points were assessed against both teams changing the score to 25-24 in favor of West Islip with two matches remaining as 285 was a forfeit.
Senior Bull captain and all league Tim Kopiske, who has overcome early season injuries took control at 189 with what was needed and pinned Lion junior Dylan Colquhoun in the second period to put Smithtown East ahead by 5 points leading to the final match, which meant that with the forfeit at 285, the Bulls were down by one team point. And the match came down to the winner at 215, and the crowd in the gym was on its feet the entire match cheering on their wrestlers.
Bull senior Nick Galante edged Lion junior Brendan Smith with the aid a stalling point and last period escape to win 2-1 which gave the Smithtown East Bulls (6-0 in league and 13-8 overall) the match 33-31 over West Islip (4-2 in league and 8-9 overall). Next up, wrestlers aim for league titles when they all meet in the league tournament.
