In a Suffolk County League III match, Smithtown East defeated East Islip 36-35 on January 21, 2011. In this showdown, perennial league power East Islip was burned by a team penalty point and was defeated by the Smithtown East Bulls.
Before the match, East Islip head coach Guy Leggio and his assistant coaches and team honored all of the wrestler’s parents and families in a classy ceremony in their final home match of the year.
The action began quickly at 119 with the Redmen’s two time all league senior Dave Dellaveccia earning a hard fought decision for his 26th win of the year over East all league junior Branson Berger, who was able to continue to wrestle after a penalty point for a dangerous move was imposed on Dellaveccia. At 125 Smithtown Bull senior Dan Burns pinned all league sophomore Chris Sorrentino in the first period to give the Bulls the match lead 6-3.
At 130, East Islip league placewinner freshman Dennis Ferro won his 24th match this year with a second period take down over Smithtown East sophomore Tylar Vigliarolo to tie the match at 6. At 135 Smithtown junior and recent tournament finalist and league placewinner Luke Outcault scored 8 takedowns in the third period to come out with a major decision over senior Redmen Ryan Harmer to give the Bulls the lead again 10-6.
The Bulls junior league finalist Eric Binder earned another first period pin over sophomore Eric Adon at 140 to increase the Bulls lead to 16-6. At 145 East Islip sophomore Matt Wilson won his team leading 28th decision over Bull all league junior Casey O’Malley, 3-0 to pull East Islip within 9.
And at 152, East Islip sophomore Jacob Axelrod did not give up and somehow survived an onslaught of points by Smithtown senior Scott Price with a surprise pin with a few seconds remaining to bring to score to 16-15 in favor of Smithtown East. At 160 junior all league Bull Anthony Forca earned a technical fall over sophomore Matt Drywa to give East a six point lead.
East Islip senior all county grappler Tyler Conway won his 20th match of the year by a pin over Bull all league senior Nick Oliveri at 171 in the second period to tie the match at 21 and in and in an uncharacteristic move was penalized a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct when the match was over after having words with Oliveri near the Smithtown East bench after shaking hands with the coaches making the score 21-20. This point would prove to be the deciding factor in the match.
At 189 Bull senior Pat Falk could not pin but earned a technical fall over East Islip sophomore Chris Chamber to increase the Bull lead to 26-20. At 215 Bull all league senior Tim Kopiske moved up two weight classes and held off all league senior Redmen James Frost with a takedown in overtime after a stalling point tied the match with at 2 to increase the Bulls lead to 29-20.
Big sophomore Dan Hayden from East Islip pinned his sophomore Bull counterpart Jordan Alperin in the beginning of the third period for his 21st win to close the Bulls lead to 29-26.
At 96 the small but tough 8th grader Jesse Dellaveccia got his 22nd win over Bull freshman Jack Truncale 10-3 to tie the match at 29. At 103 freshman Redmen Hunter Ingram was too much for fellow 9th grade Bull Darius Caporaso and his pin put East Islip ahead for the first time since the first match.
It all came down to Bull sophomore and second year varsity starter Justin Burns at 112 who needed a pin to give the Bulls the win and a chance for a league title. The match started slowly with no score in the first period as 10th grade all league Redmen Justin Moreno knew what was at stake. But Moreno could not avoid the Burns cradle and was pinned in the second period and the unsportsmanlike point gave the victory to Smithtown East 36 (5-0 in league and 12-8 overall) over East Islip 35 (2-3 in league and 16-10 overall).
