In a Suffolk County League III match, Smithtown East defeated Newfield 36-29 on January 14, 2011. The action began quickly at 125 with a pin by Newfield Wolverine senior Jesse Dilevio over Smithtown Bull senior Dan Burns to put Newfield up by 6.
At 130 Newfield senior league placewinner Tyler Lewis earned a major decision over sophomore Bull Evan Greenberg to increase the Newfield lead to 10. Smithtown junior and recent tournament finalist Luke Outcault got the Bulls on the board with a tough 3-1 win over Joe Laterra to make the match score 10-3.
At 140, the Bulls junior league finalist Eric Binder earned another pin over Newfield Wolverine Rotima Giwa to reduce the lead to 10-9. At 145, Smithtown co-captain league placewinner and recent tournament finalist Casey O’Malley squared off against Newfield Wolverine senior and league placewinner Rich Appenzella who earned a last second takedown to put the match into overtime and then outstretched O’Malley for the takedown to win 5-3 to increase the Newfield lead to 13-9.
152 Bull junior league placewinner Anthony Forca brought Smithtown closer with a 7-2 win over a tough Brandon Irizarry to reduce the lead to one at 13-12. At 160, Bulls senior league placewinner Nick Oliveri plowed his way to a 13-8 win over Newfield sophomore Erick Diaz to put Smithtown in the lead 15-13.
At 171 Tim Kopiske from Smithtown made weight to earn a forfeit. At 189, Bull senior league finalist Pat Falk earned his second quick pin of the week over Carlos Cartegella to increase the Smithtown lead to 27-13. At 215, Wolverine junior and returning league champion Julian Santiago outworked Bull senior Nick Galante for a 12-3 major to reduce the lead to 27-17.
Big Karl Rindfleison took down and pinned Bull sophomore Jordan Alperin to further cut the Smithtown lead to 27-23 leading to 96 where 9th grader Jack Truncale started strong with a 5-0 lead and did not let up leading to a pin over Newfield’s Mario DiPiazza making the match score 33-23.
At 103, Sayville champion Steven Bair from Smithtown East need a takedown in OT to defeat Newfield’s Antonio Rocklein 3-1 to make the match score 36-23. Newfield 8th grader and second year varsity wrestler Brandon Aviles held down East sophomore Justin Burns 7-0 to reduce the Smithtown lead to 36-26.
Newfield junior league finalist Tom Fenster took on Smithtown East junior league finalist Branson Berger in the last match at 119 and Fenster held on for 5-4 win after 2 stalling points in the third period in what may be a preview of the league championship in February to make the final score Smithtown East 36 (3-0 in league and 10-8 overall) and Centereach 29 (2-2 in league and 4-10 overall).
