In a Suffolk County League III match postponed a day due to the storm, Smithtown East defeated Centereach 68-9 on January 13, 2011.

The action began at 145 with a high scoring 17-8 major decision by senior Bull Scott Price over Centereach sophomore Chris Nieves which gave Smithtown East a 4-0 lead. At 152 Bulls East junior and league placewinner Anthony Forca came down to his league weight and just got by Centereach senior co-captain Matt Seidell, 4-3 with a third period takedown.

At 160, Bulls senior league placewinner Nick Oliveri pinned his Centereach senior counterpart James Banzer to give East the lead 13-0. At 171 Centereach senior Anthony Boccio was too much for Bulls junior Tom Cox who he pinned to cut the lead to 13-6.

Bull senior league finalist Pat Falk quickly pinned Centereach junior Ben Brenner to increase the Smithtown lead to 19-6. At 215, Bull senior Nick Galante and Centereach senior Vincenzo Caruso were tied 5-5 after a back and forth first period when Galante reversed Caruso to his back to a pin to give East a lead that they would not surrender at 25-6.

At 285 big Bull sophomore Jordan Alperin earned a pin with a quick reversal at the beginning of the second period over Centereach senior Dylan Berrian to increase the Smithtown margin to 31-6.

The action moved down to the now mandatory weight of 96 and 9th grader Darius Caporaso from East overwhelmed fellow freshman Patrick Ortiz with a pin at the end of the first period to make the score 37-6. Sayville champion Steven Bair from East earned a fast pin over Centereach freshman Joe Commesso to move East way out in front 43-6.

East sophomore Justin Burns took down his junior opponent Anthony Parrotta 10-1. League placewinner and East junior Branson Berger bar armed his way to another victory over Centereach junior Connor Hassler to make the match score 50-6.

Centereach senior co-captain Jake Pusateri escaped with less than 30 second left in the match and took down East senior 125 pounder Daniel Burns to add 3 points to Centereach’s score, 50-9. At 130 and 135 East Bulls Evan Greenberg and Luke Outcault earned forfeits. The Bulls junior league finalist Eric Binder continued his pinning ways with a quick fall over Centereach sophomore Jakub Fiedoryszyn to give Smithtown East (2-0 in league and 9-8 overall) the league victory over Centereach, 68-9, (0-3 in league and 2-13 overall).

In a battle of the Bulls, Smithtown East defeated their cross town counterparts 39-26 before a full gymnasium celebrating Alumni Night at Smithtown West, in a Suffolk County League III match on January 5, 2011. Before the match, over 50 Smithtown wrestling alumni (all invited by Alumni President Sean O’Malley) were honored matside. Smithtown West Coach Ken Leverich, and Athletic Director Pat Smith (both Smithtown graduates) welcomed back the athletes to the School. Present among the alumni and now coaching East were Dave Cummings, Sean Coffin, Jack Truncale, and Steve Jenkins, and from West assisting Ken Leverich were Jim Giugliano and Paul Krivosta. Also present were Middle School coaches Tom Cuccinello and Brian Betencourt.

The action began quickly at 171 with a pin by Mike Weitermeyer from West over Nick Oliveri from East to give the early lead to West, 6-0. East Senior Bull and league placewinner Tim Kopiske came back from an injury and wrestled his first match of the season earning a major decision over Vito Caputo, 12-4 to narrow the West lead to 6-4.

At 215, Bull senior Nick Galante escaped and then threw and pinned Orrie Wolfer from West to give East the lead 10-6. At 285 big Mike Hughes from West wore out and finally pinned game sophomore Jordan Alperin from East to put West ahead again 12-10.

The action moved down to the now mandatory weight of 96 and Nick Hoffman from West overwhelmed East freshman Jack Truncale with a technical fall to extend the West lead to 17-10. Sayville champion Steven Bair from East earned a decision over Chris Addisone 7-2 at 103 to move East within 4.

In a defensive battle at 112, Joe Giamis from West bested Justin Burns 3-1 to extend the West lead to 20-13. League placewinner and East junior Branson Berger bar armed his way to a major decision over James Punzone, 9-1 to close the gap to 20-17.

West senior 125 pounder Pat Dudek had 2 near falls in the second period to defeat East sophomore Tylar Vigliarolo 8-1 to increase the West lead to 23-17. At 130, West senior Vic Iacona overcame blood and injury time to narrowly edge East Bull sophomore Evan Greenberg, 6-4 to give West a 26-17 lead.

The Bulls from East charged back with junior league placewinner Luke Outcault taking down Rich O’Leary 16-6 at 135 to make the team score 26-21. East junior Eric Binder extended his pinning streak with a quick fall over West senior Kyle Gruder at 140 to give East the lead in the match 27-26.

East senior and first year starter Scott Price proved his place in the lineup with a dramatic first period pin at 145 over Marco Mosleh to put the East team ahead 33-26 leading into the match of the evening at 152 where junior league placewinner Casey O’Malley faced off against his cross town rival and league placewinner Joe Hunsucker from West.

In an exciting and closely contested match, O’Malley earned a take down at the end of the first period, a reversal thereafter and then held off Hunsucker at the end to earn a 5-3 victory to seal the team win for East. At 160, Bulls East junior and league placewinner Anthony Forca moved up and defeated Justin Pardo, 6-3 giving East the win, 39-26.
