2010/11 New York State Individual Rankings (Preseason)

This is the preseason release of the New York State Individual rankings for 2010/11. Both DI and DII wrestlers are ranked together.

This is the preseason release of the New York State Individual rankings for 2010/11. Both DI and DII wrestlers are ranked together. Since it is impossible to know what weights returning athletes will compete, they are ranked at the weights where they competed at in the 2010 final tournaments. As such, this ranking should serve as a baseline to begin the discussion around weights, unrecognized wrestlers, and position.

There will be 3 releases of the state individual rankings: mid January, January end, and finally mid February. If you would like to contribute feedback to our rankings before they are published, send an email to webmaster(at)lighthousewrestling(dot)com.

  2. At 215 Grant Gebo beat Lucas Meyers 12-5 at the Shenendaowa Duals ansd also beat Mike Riley twice, last time by pin. Grant was ranked pretty high as a junior and hes beaten 2 kids allready on ur poll, just something to think about not being disrespectful or anything. Also at the Eastern States Smith was beat by Adam Biron, whom Grant beat in the semi-finals of Section 2.

  3. How can Zach diekel be ranked higher then Austyn hayes when hayes took 4th at 171 and diekel took 5th at the same weight.

    1. Hayes beat Diekel at states 11-6. Tony Lock wrestled Hayes and Hayes tech pinned him at the 2009 CIABURRY/VANGORDON TOURNAMENT.

  4. dave ng is wrestling 285 and gebo beat lucas myer early in the season, he was a much better wrestler by seasons end. also isnt kavanagh wrestling 189?

  5. john clemente beat
    3.Ben Mowry (Pal-Mac, V) – Sr
4.Ryan Guynup (Saranac, VII) – Sr
    5.Jacob Demmon (Clifton-Fine, X) – Jr
6.Mike Beckwith (Greene, IV) – So
    7.Erik Rueckle (Union Endicott, IV)
    all last year between 2009/2010

    1. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. While defeating all those wrestlers is impressive, what’s even more impressive to me is that clemente wrestled so many state caliber wrestlers in one season. Believe me, it’s rare.

  6. Keep the input coming. Though I’ve heard of some wrestlers planning to go to new weights this season, to project the weights for all the returning wrestlers is an impossible feat.

Having done rankings with projected weights, the result is so riddled with errors to be useless. I find this approach is more valuable as a baseline for moving forward.

  7. I’m biased because he’s my son but I think Joe Cummings of Nyack should be in your rankings. He qualified for states at 171 last year as the Section 1 Champion. He beat Joe Bilello and the Allesendrini boy two weeks ago in East Brunswick. He beat Joe Kavanagh this past weekend at the Hudson Valley Challenge. He’s going to go 189 lb. this year.

  8. john clemente beat
    3.Ben Mowry (Pal-Mac, V) – Sr—-Virginia beach nationals 133
    4.Ryan Guynup (Saranac, VII) – Sr—NAC finals 135
    6.Mike Beckwith (Greene, IV) – So—-Cylde cole C 145
    7.Erik Rueckle (Union Endicott, IV)—Eastern States 135
    he never beat jaccob

  9. Tim Schaefer should be higher than 7th. He took 4th in state and beat McCormick and also he has never lost to Page.

    1. Wrestlers who didn’t meet the criteria for top 8 ranking, but could possibly be in the top 8 come the end of the season.

  10. a few things a lot of the 96 kids are going up to 112,also a formal all county lanzillotti out of roslyn high school beat d2 state champ tristan riffanberg d1 runner up lewandowski and a few other all staters from out of new york and other qualifiers for states from different sections, surely a kid to watch this season

    1. i think hes going 12, he was 3 last year tho….he should make 12 ive seen him around and he looks a little out of shape but hes wrestling real tough

  11. Ng at 285…He’s not going to do very good. He’s a much smaller 285…He maybe fast but once weight is on him…He will fail….I think 285 rankings is fine…

Mark West is going to win it all hes a very solid wrestler no amtter what.

  12. I am trying to find out the NYS wrestling rank for my son CJ Goldizen of Onteora High School, in Boiceville NY (Ulster county).
I believe that he has been wrestling in the 140 or 135lb weight class.

    Thank You.
    Jeannie

  13. Bill, I di some research on Goldizen. He was the Section IX DII runner-up last season at 140-pounds. Because the person who defeated him in the finals returns for his senior season in 2011, my thinking is that the answer to the question is that he is likely either the #1 (if they go different weights) or #2 (if they are at the same weight) wrestler in his sectional.

  14. Some Section 6 feedback

103: Abdulgawi Mohamed took 1st at the NHSCA Championships (barbato was in his bracket)

112: Tom page lost to Tim Schaefer 2 times last year

119: Kevin Strong owns Jordan McGregor

152: Missing Tyler Bruce (North tonawanda) Clearly Section 6’s best

I understand people are going to be in different weight classes, those are just some things to consider.

  15. Ng, hasn’t wrestled at all yet..Doesn’t deserve a ranking for anything. Mid-way through season not one match recorded.

  16. I wont sit here and claim to know all the kids from NYS but how does Clark (189) even get ranked statewide when in NYC he lose to a Senior ROOKIE twice and has a 500 record overall.

I dont feel Mohameed should even be ranked @ 285 …

Does Lighthouse plan to do a end of season ranking for NYS or can we have a separate NYC ranking, email me and I would like to assist with these since I coach in NYC,

    1. Only the kids who participated in the state tournament and return in 2010-11 get ranked in the preseason. Preseason should be taken with a grain of salt. We use them to set a baseline for future rankings and to identify the athletes we should be following. Anyone who believes it’s possible to put a preseason state ranking that resembles anything like the final results at states doesn’t understand how difficult the job is.

NYS is a huge state. Every season we ask for support, and it ends up being the same 2 guys who pour through the results across the entire state. If you can’t imagine how difficult that is to do it justice, I suggest you give it a try. You might do it in an hour, but the ranking will reflect an hour’s worth of work, if you know what I mean.

Here’s what I include at the top of the preseason ranking. We’ve yet to get anyone to offer assistance. All we’re looking for is people to review what we put together before it goes out.

“There will be 3 releases of the state individual rankings: mid January, January end, and finally mid February. If you would like to contribute feedback to our rankings before they are published, send an email to webmaster(at)lighthousewrestling(dot)com.”

I’d love to have 15 people each reviewing one weight class. If we had that and they gave it an objective, serious effort, the ranking would be great, and it wouldn’t take much time.

We will put out the next state ranking in mid january when there are sufficient results to evaluate the competition.

I realize you weren’t complaining, but I’d thought I’d take the time to explain the challenges we face in getting the ranking to resemble a fair evaluation.

  17. You should look at Shear 189 and Stanton 215 both from Greene, Section 4. Both undefeated with some big wins last year and this year. Both 2nd in Section ly – Stanton to Sibly (4th nys 215) and Shear to Todd (2nd in nys 189).
