The preview and realtime coverage provided by Matt Diano are extremely well done. It is amazing how well he knows each wrestler within each weight class. Thanks Matt for all for hard work and intelligent insight. It was fun reading your commentary. Best wishes from Brooklyn.

  • Matt Diano says:

    Mr. Nilsen,

Thank you sincerely for the kind words. I am very appreciative of them.

In the past week or so, I have had a lot of people commend me on my efforts.

While I am truly flattered and honored that people liked my work, I am always one of the first to say that the quality is best attributed to having been blessed with great subjects/individuals to cover. It is their efforts that I wish to recognize and praise.

Thank you again. It is people like yourself that make doing what I do a pure joy and privlege…Be well

    –Matt

P.S. Going by the last name, I must assume that you are a direct relative of Pat from Xavier…If so, allow me to say how much I enjoyed watching him wrestle this season. His comeback victory over Beresford at the CHSAA Duals was one of the highlights for me…I also thought he showed immense heart, rebounding from the tough quarterfinal loss to come back and wrestle for 3rd/4th (including avenging a loss to Fowler in the consol. semis).

  • Michael Nilsen says:

    Hi Matt,
Yes, I am Patrick’s Father and your knowledge about Patrick’s season and his match versus SJC at the January duels really showed amazing insight. When I checked your commentary on the other weight classes I was fascinated by how far reaching your thoughts were and I agreed with much of your commentary. In some cases I just did not have much knowledge myself, so you did a nice job filling me in.

And, your comments above in the postscript once again show that same insightfulness. You made me laugh when I read it, because the semi-finals match is what I am most proud of for Patrick. He had a triple overtime win that was amazing. I ran out of tape and battery right after he escaped in period 5 and missed him holding Fowler down in period 6, but I was very happy for him. He was so disappointed after the first loss to Beresford.

This is only the second time I have seen a match end in triple overtime and the other time was at West Point during the USMA Brigade Finals. Patrick’s older brother is a third year cadet and during plebe year, his company H-1 made the finals versus C-4 (i.e. 4 regiments and 8 companies apiece for 32 altogether). In those finals, the H-1 team captain asked me to film it, which I did and posted to google video several years ago. My older son wrestled the very last match, but his captain wrestled before him and had an amazing 6 period match. Those cadets are great athletes and many of them are superb wrestlers, so in case you have the time here is the link:

Matt, you have an excellent talent at sports writing for wrestling, because you are able to identify highly significant points and describe them well in writing. Regardless of anything else we discuss, your efforts are much appreciated by me and many others. Thank you.

    Mr. Nilsen,

Again, I am humbled by your kind words….

It was a pleasure being able to watch your son compete…In fact, over the course of the 2010 season, I found myself very much becoming a fan of the Xavier program.

While I am a Chaminade graduate and was pulling for Troy Sampson in teh 140-pound final, my heart truly did break for Andrew Murano. While I never had the opportunity to speak with him, anything that I have ever heard from the NYC coaches presented him in the brightest of lights…If is too bad that both young gentlemen could not go to Albany.

As far as the Beresford/Pat match at the January duals, what I find very humorous is the fact that I came a few minutes away from missing it. I literally arrived just as 189 was taking the mat. I am glad that I did, as that match became my favorite one of day #1…So vivid in my memory was Patrick’s TD in the closing seconds, that it truly was very ease to recall it when writing the preview.

With regard to his victory over Fowler last weekend, mark my words, that is a win that is going to take on a great significance in the coming years….Danny Fowler was a schoolboy State Champion last season as an 8th-grader and is projected to be better than his older brother, Brendan….In other words, Pat might have beaten a future NYS Champion. That is an accomplishment that one should most definitely take pride in.

Again, I thank you and am touched by the warm regards you have expressed to me in your messages…It is these sentiments that make me love doing what I do.

I wish Patrick nothing but the best things in life going forward. It was an honor getting the opportunity to watch him lay it all on the line several times this season.

    All of my best,

    –Matthew
