Smithtown East Wrestling dual meet recaps for week 5 of 2010. Smithtown East competed against East Islip on January 29th and Smithtown East and Half Hollow Hills East on January 27th.

The Redmen from East Islip (6-0 in league and 22-8 overall) came from behind to defeat the Bulls from Smithtown East (4-2 in league and 11-6 overall) 35 to 25 in hotly contested Suffolk County league III match before a packed gym celebrating senior night at Smithtown East High School on January 29, 2010. In addition to the seniors wrestling in the match, the Bulls coaches recognized senior wrestlers Pat Devlin, Zachary Greenberg, Brian Kennelly, Ryan Montvydas and Brendan Oseback as well as their parents for their dedication to the sport.

The match started at 145 with Bull sophomore Nick Oliveri holding on to Matt Wilson after two clasping points with a take down and near pin in overtime to win 7-2 giving Smithtown the early 3-0 match lead. At 152 in a battle of league champions, East Islip’s Tyler Conway used the edge of the mat and held off Smithtown East Bull senior league champion Kyle Eagan, 3-1 to even the team score at 3. (Eagan, a five year varsity starter earned his 100th career victory over the weekend at the Sachem East Tournament).

2009 league finalist senior Dan Reiter used a head lock ankle pick to pin senior Anthony Argento at 160 to get his 18th win of the year giving the Bulls the match lead 9 to 3. At 171 Redmen senior and 2009 league champ Nick Arma overcame a first period take down by junior Tim Kopiske from Smithtown East to earn his 29th win of the year and narrow the team score to 9 to 6 for the Bulls.

East Islip 2009 league champion senior Erik Vik moved up to 189 and pinned Bulls sophomore Josh Ward to give the Redmen the lead in the match 12-9. The Bulls came back at 215 with a pin by senior Steve Krajci in what was a close 3-2 match over junior James Frost to give the Bulls the lead again 15 to 12 moving to the light weights.

At 103, Bulls pin leader sophomore Branson Berger earned his 20th win of the year with a pin over tough sophomore league finalist Kyle Shevlin to increase the Bulls lead to 21-12. East Islip’s junior David Dellavecchia was too much for freshman Bull Justin Burns earning the pin the second period and his 29th win of the season to put the Redmen back in the match 21-18.

East Islip took the match lead 24-21 at 119 when 8th grader Dennis Ferro pinned sophomore Bull Wally Wagers. At 125 Redmen senior league placewinner Mike DiLiello used his single leg take down to defeat the Bulls rough senior Dylan Clay to increase the East Islip lead to 27-21.

Bull sophomore Eric Binder at 130 just about pinned game East Islip junior Ryan Harmer who held out on his back for most of the match to pull the Bulls within 2 points, 27-25. At 135 the Redmen’s junior Tom Carew held off the Bull sophomore Luke Outcault to get his 23rd win of the year 4-2 to increase the East Islip lead 30-25.

At 140, Redmen senior 2009 league champion Alex Brown moved up a weight and handled Bulls sophomore Casey O’Malley to get his 27th win of the year to give East Islip the match 35 to 25 and the league III dual meet championship.

The Bulls from Smithtown East (11-5 overall and 4-1 in league) defeated the Thunderbirds from Half Hollow Hills East (1-8 overall and 0-5 in league) 59 to 12 in a Suffolk County league III match at Half Hollow Hills East High School on January 27, 2010.

The wrestling began at 130 with Thunderbird captain junior Nick Terzi capitalizing on a first period take down and near fall over sophomore Smithtown Bull sophomore Eric Binder to hold on for a 5-3 decision to give Hills East the early 3-0 lead. At 135 Bull sophomore Luke Outcault pinned Hills East sophomore Alejando Henao to put Smithtown in the lead 6-3.

At 140, sophomore and second year varsity starter Casey O’Malley scored 16 points in a technical fall over Thunderbird senior Chris Riguer to give the Bulls a 12-3 lead. At 145 Thunderbird sensational junior Deshawn McNeil, son of NY Jet’s all pro running back Freeman McNeil overwhelmed the Bulls Tim Devlin stepping into the lineup with a quick take down and a pin making the score 11-9 in favor of the Bulls.

Bull senior league champion, five year varsity starter and co-captain Kyle Eagan pinned Hills East junior Ryan Delaney at 152 to give the Bulls a 17-9 lead. At 160 Bull senior and league champion Dan Reiter pinned Thunderbird senior Sal Spadaro in the first period to increase the Bulls lead to 23-9. After a forfeit at 171 and 189 Smithtown’s junior Pat Falk pinned Hills East senior Justin Tuefel at 215 to make the match score 41-9.

The Thunderbirds lineup was thin and they were also forced to forfeit 103 and 112 and at 119 the quick and lanky Thunderbird sophomore Corey Jones took down the Bulls sophomore Wally Wagers six times and earned a 15-9 decision and a win for Hills East to make the match score 53-12. And with a forfeit at 125, the final score was 59-12 for the Smithtown Bulls over the Half Hollow Hills East Thunderbirds.
