On Wednesday morning (September 9th), InterMat broke the story that that 2009 Suffolk County Champion, Billy Coggins, has elected to continue his academic and athletic career in Charlottesville as a member of the University of Virginia’s class of 2014. In making this decision, the 2009 NYS DI place-winner (5th @160 pounds) became the third member of the Rocky Point High School wrestling team to formally give a verbal commitment to the college/university of his choice. He is joined by the #75 ranked recruit in the nation, Stephen Dutton, who committed to Lehigh University in early July and Anthony Volpe, who just two weeks after Dutton, announced that he would be Rutgers bound…The success of these three young gentlemen are indicative of the quality program run by Head Coach, Darren Goldstein.
Coggins, who initially burst onto the national scholastic stage in 2007 with a 5th place finish at the 2007 NHSCA Freshman National Tournament at 140-pounds, has not looked back since….As a sophomore, the future Cavalier wrestler earned the first of his two All-County placements, taking 5th at 145 pounds. He would cap off 2008 with his second consecutive NHSCA All-American honor, placing 6th at the same weight class.
Citing the immense enthusiasm of Head Coach Steve Garland and his staff, the top notch academic reputation, as well as the overall essence of the UVA campus, Coggins choose the Atlantic Coast Conference member (ACC) over a hometown favorite, the appeal of the Ivy League, and the opportunity to wrestle for a former Section XI legend…Hofstra University, Columbia University, and the University of Maryland respectively made up the other schools on his short list.
In giving the verbal to Garland, Coggins become the second wrestler from the class of 2010 to commit to the Cavaliers….In July, Colorado prep, Tanner Hirstine revealed to InterMat that he would be Charlottesville bound.
With the addition of both Hirstine and Coggins, it appears that UVA is well on their way toward assembling back-to-back elite recruiting classes…This Fall, Virginia welcomed its #6 nationally ranked recruiting class, consisting of such blue-chippers as: Jon Fausey (PA-#3 ranked @189; 2009 AA State Champion), Zach Clemente (NY-#2 ranked @145; 2x NYS DI Champion), Nicky Gordon (PA- 3x National Prep Finalist), Gabe Gomez (CO- 3x State Finalist; State Champion in 2008), and Andrew Williams (VA- 4x 2A State Champion)…Jonathan Becker, who was ranked as the #10 wrestler in the nation at 189-pounds was also a part of this recruiting class, but has left UVA and enrolled at North Carolina State.
InterMat projects Coggins as competing at either 174 or 184 on the collegiate level.
On behalf of everyone at LHW, we sincerely congratulate Billy and his family on making this decision !!!
