InterMat is now reporting that 2009 NYS Champion, Stephen Dutton, of Rocky Point High School has given a verbal commitment to continue his academic and athletic career under the tutelage of Coach Pat Santoro at Lehigh University.

In addition to the aforementioned State title last season, the Bethlehem, PA bound wrestler is a three time Suffolk/Section XI DI Champion, a two-time NYS finalist (runner-up as a freshman in 2007), as well as a three-time New York State placewinner (finishing no lower than third during his scholastic career).

On the national level, Dutton has been every bit as successful, following up his 2007 NHSCA Freshmen National title with a fourth place finish in 2008 and a runner-up finish in 2009 at the Virginia Beach based event. The rising senior also added a 6th place finish in a stacked weight class at the 2008 Super-32 Tournament…The eventual winner of the Battle for the Belt being 2009 #1 overall recruit, David Taylor (Penn State) of Ohio.

Dutton, who according to Newsday was considering schools such as The Ohio State and the University of Wisconsin-Madison earlier this year, became the second blue chip member from the class of 2010 to give a verbal to the perennial EIWA contender….A little over a month ago (June 5th), Garden State phenom, Frank Cagnina, the #19 ranked recruit in the land, announced that he would take his immense talents to Lehigh.

Projected as a 141-pounder at the next level, Dutton should be in the mix to break into the Mountain Hawk starting line-up immediately, with returning starter/2009 EIWA Champion, Seth Ciasulli, scheduled to complete his NCAA eligibility after the 2010 season.

Dutton becomes the second high profile Empire Stater in as many years to have his services landed by Lehigh. Three-time NYS Champion, Austin Meys, will be a true freshman this coming Fall in Bethlehem…Departing Mountain Hawk senior, Trevor Chinn, was one of the prized recruits in former coach, Greg Strobel’s 2004 recruiting class.

The pride and joy of Rocky Point joins fellow Long Island Nick Arujau (verbal to Hofstra) as the lone members of New York’s class of 2010 to formally announce their collegiate intentions….Tyler Beckwith, Angelo Malvestuto, and Nick Wilcox joined Dutton and Arujau as members of InterMat’s top-100 Recruits list.
