This Week in Wrestling #14: 02/16-02/22

As a personal note to Christian Psomas, allow me to say this—-Christian, I know from Jason and Lou how much winning an individual catholic state title meant to you.  Therefore,  I 100 percent understand how much it hurts right now.  However, please, do not allow one loss to ruin what was a great season for you.  You, like the other seniors, have so much to be proud of.  You were a key member of bringing the hardware back to Staten Island.  In 20 years, it is unlikely I will remember who won the 171-pound weight class at the 2009 CHSAA tournament.  However, I will remember the name Christian Psomas.  He was a part of something much bigger than himself.  He was one of the kids that helped rebuild what has the makings of a CHSAA dynasty at Monsignor Farrell….Raise your head and smile.

As it pertains to the coverage of the tournament, I hope that everyone liked the summary article.  By nature, as silly as it sounds, I am not all that polished when it comes to wrap-up pieces.  I am more in my element when doing live text coverage or when given the freedom to shoot from the hip and talk about a topic of my choosing…..Originally, the plan this past weekend was for me to go upstate and provide some live blogging and video of the finals.  However, I was unfortunately unable to get a wireless signal.   A lot of this was my own fault.  Coach Messore from the host school was extremely supportive and constantly offered to help.  Therefore, I do not want there to be any misconceptions regarding St. Francis.  I felt that they did a fantastic job playing hosts for the weekend.  If I was a more pushy individual, I probably could have gotten the wireless signal.  However, I felt that it would be more respectful to not disturb Messore so that he could focus on getting his team prepared for the tournament.  In future years, I hope to be able to bring you live video of CHSAA events.  In much the same way that I know a lot of you feel extreme loyalty to the kids in Sections VIII and XI, I feel about the kids from the CHSAA.  I want to see to it that ALL of these deserving young men get their chance to shine.

Tomorrow, I will likely be at HU for day #2 of the Nassau County tournament.  Therefore, if you see me, be sure to tap me on the shoulder and say hello.  I am a fairly decent enough guy.

Unlike most weeks, I am not going to write a wrestling recap segment.   As a lot of you are aware (because I mention it way too much), I am in the process of applying to graduate school.  Therefore, so as to not write myself out, I am going to pull back a little bit on the reins and allow creative juices to return to full mass in preparation for writing the personal statement that must accompany my four applications….I am still accepting letters of Rec. if anyone has a burning desire to see me follow in their footsteps; LOL

Anyhow, because I will not be writing the summary article, I wanted to begin to wrap up this journal entry by congratulating all of the Section XI champions from last week.  Equal sentiments go out to all of the team and individual winners at the various Nassau County qualifiers.  Best of luck to the Nassau wrestlers who will be competing today and tomorrow with a birth to Albany on the line.  Finally, kudos to Lou Ruggirello, Justin Accordino, Ryan Patrovich, and Alton Lucas for all going 2-0 last weekend as the Pride split matches with Edinboro and Buffalo

Finally, as my closing remarks, please allow me to ask a favor of all of you.  If you are an individual who reads my material regularly ( I like to joke around by saying that I only have two regulars and I am related to both) and want to show a sign of your appreciation, I ask that for every article of mine that you have read this season, that you make a donation to Pinning Down Autism.  This is a foundation that was close to my heart to begin with prior to this weekend, but has taken on a much greater meaning to me because of my four days upstate.  Some of my fondest memories from last weekend’s trip were the moments that I got to spend with a remarkable young boy.

Thank you and God Bless !!!
