The Bulls from Smithtown East (13-5 overall and now 5-1 in League III) defeated the Wolverines from Newfield (9-5 overall now 4-2 in League III) 32 to 22 in a Suffolk County League III Match at Newfield High School on January 23, 2009.

The match started at 125 and Newfield sophomore Tyler Lewis used a switch with 20 seconds remaining to defeat Smithtown East freshman Luke Outcault 2-1 and give the Wolverines the lead in the match 3-0. At 130 Bulls senior Joe Verderber defeated Newfield senior Parker Ventra 9-0 to give Smithtown the match lead at 4-3. At 135 Wolverine senior all league captain Glen Vogeli (18-4) gave Bulls junior Kyle Eagan all he could handle after two scoreless periods with 7 points in the final period to win 7-1 to give the match lead to Newfield 6-4. (Nick Jones from Newfield, all league wrestler and all county football player sat out the match due to injury). At 140 Smithtown Bull senior captain Ryan Kopiske dominated Wolverine senior Joe Caracappa with a pin after leading 10-0 to give the Bulls the match lead 10-6. At 145, Bulls junior Dan Reiter defeated Newfield senior captain Ryan Haining 4-0 to increase the Smithtown lead in the match to 13-6. Wolverine senior captain Shaun Percoro edged Smithtown sophomore wrester Tim Kopiske 4-0 to close the lead to 13-9. Newfield senior captain, Holiday Tournament champion, 2008 all league wrestler (and all County Football player) Ryan Scannell raised his season record to 17-2 and tied the match at 13 all with a win over Smithtown Bulls junior Eric Chasteen 12-3. Newfield increased their lead to 16-13 at 171 with a win by senior Brandon Henry who used a third period fireman’s carry takedown over Smithtown senior Isaac Reiter 6-5. At 189 Wolverine senior Hugo Roman pinned his senior counterpart from Smithtown Chris Lambert in the third period after an exchange of reversals and near falls to make the match score 22-13 for Newfield. At 215 Senior all league Bulls wrestler Kevin Cassidy pinned Wolverine senior Marcoun Ibrahim in the first period to bring the Bulls closer in the team match 22-19. At 103, junior Max Gold from Smithtown East defeated Newfield all league freshman freshman Anthony Hirschfield 3-2 with an escape with 13 seconds remaining to tie the match score at 22. At 112, first year Bulls varsity wrester Tyler Vigliarolo scored all 10 of his points in the last period to defeat Newfield freshman Tom Fenster 10-2 to put the Bulls ahead in the match 26-22. The last match of the evening featured Bulls junior Dylan Clay at 119 who pinned Newfield sophomore Jesse Dilevo to give the Smithtown East Bulls the league three victory over the Newfield Wolverines 32-22.

The Bulls from Smithtown East (12-5 overall and now 4-1 in League III) defeated the Cougars from Centereach (now 3-2 in League III) 28 to 13 in a Suffolk County League III Match at Smithtown East High School on January 21, 2009.

The league match featured two teams with 3-1 records. The match started at 145 and Smithtown East junior Dan Reiter cruised to a 9-1 major decision over Cougar sophomore Matt Seidel to give Smithtown East a 4-0 lead. At 152 senior captain and all league wrester Dan Walsh from Centereach held off sophomore Bull Tim Kopiske 8-7 to close the lead to 4-3. Centereach took the match lead at 160 with sophomore Anthony Camarda beating Bulls junior Eric Chasteen 11-4. Smithtown regained the lead at 189 with a victory via third period reversal and near fall by senior Isaac Reiter over his senior counterpart Mike Milmerstadt from Centereach 7-4. At 189 Cougar captain and 2008 all league grappler defeated senior Chris Lambert 12-2 to make the match score 10-7 for Centereach. At 215 Senior all league Bulls wrestler Kevin Cassidy overcame a first period take down and near fall to defeat tough Cougar senior Pat Gatto 10-7 to tie the team match score at 10. In an exciting exhibition at 96 Bulls freshman Branson Berger overcame a wrist injury and took down Cougar freshman Connor Hassler in the first overtime period to win 7-5. The match moved to 103 and junior Max Gold from Smithtown East defeated Centereach junior Lic Noens 6-0 to put the Bulls ahead in the team score 13-10. At 112, first year Bulls varsity wrester Tyler Vigliarolo defeated Cougar sophomore Jake Pusateri 3-2 with a last period takedown. Bulls junior Dylan Clay at 119 controlled Centereach senior Eric Noens 6-0 to increase the team score to 19-10. Freshman Luke Outcault from Smithtown East defeated sophomore Spencer Weiss from Centereach 5-0. At 130 Bulls, all league wrestler Kyle Eagan shut out Cougar senior and all league wrestler Matt Melito 8-3 to increase the Smithtown lead to 25-10. At 135, Centereach senior Steve Fisher held off charging Bull junior Zach Greenberg 3-2. In a featured match at 140 Smithtown Bull senior captain Ryan Kopiske faced off against Centereach senior captain Andre Gil. The first period ended without a takedown but with a stalling warning to Gil who wrestled in a defensive counter style. In the second period, Kopiske escaped but could not take down the defensive Cougar. The third period began with Gil down and he escaped immediately and the match continued with the grapplers on their feet both seeking a takedown to win. Kopiske pressed the action and in doing so, fell victim to a fine counter trip takedown to Gil who took the lead 3-1; but he could not hold the Bull and the match again moved to their feet with the score 3-2. Kopiske again pressed Gil and the referee awarded him a stalling point with 1 second remaining to tie the score 3-3 and send the match to overtime. In OT, Kopiske hit a double leg takedown to win the match 5-3 which caused the crowd to erupt in cheers from the Smithtown home crowd and jeers from the Centereach traveling fans and faithful. The final score of the match was 28-13, giving the Smithtown Bulls a league III win over the Centereach Cougars.
