Fitzmaurice Seals the Deal

When we looked at this match last week for a preview we said it would come down to one key match and bonus points, and that is exactly what happened. If one match goes the other way in this dual MacArthur escapes with a victory. Instead Wantagh won the key match of the evening and received big pins from Matt Lowe, Thomas Hall and John Gresheimer to seal the victory.

The key bout of the evening was the 130 pound match between Nick Fitzmaurice of Wantagh and Ariel Guerrero of MacArthur. Guerrero looked superior on his feet as he took a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period, and he was in deep on another takedown attempt midway through period # 2. That is when the match turned to Wantagh’s advantage. Fitzmaurice was able to throw Guerrrero over his head and to his back for a 5 point move…nearly pinning Guerrero. But the Mac wrestler was very game as he escaped and scored another takedown in the 3rd period to tighten the score to 6-4. Then with time running down Guerrero tilted Fitzmaurice to his back for 2 points to tie the match before Fitzmaurice reversed him with seconds left for an thrilling 8-6 victory!

This was a hard fought match by two game wrestlers. Guerrero was obviously undersized, but he wrestled to win, and these two wrestlers put on a show for the best bout of the night. Other match highlights in the Wantagh victory include: a strong performance by Chris Perez at 103 for MacArthur defeating Joe Barbato; Paul Ligouri with a 10-0 victory over Tyler Dunne of MacArthur in a match where Dunne refused to be pinned; a feature match had Brian Herold from Mac bumping up to 152 to face defending state champ John Gresheimer. Herold seemed to have the right strategy for this match as he held it scoreless deep into the first period, but could not escape a late first period headlock and was pinned.

LHW was there with a live text feed and the crowd was electric. We can only hope there will be more matches like this to cover during this season. Perhaps we move over to Suffolk for live coverage of the Rocky Point- Hauppauge match.
