This Week in College Wrestling #1….11/17-11/23
Hello again everyone.
After spending the past 48 hours celebrating Hofstra’s 18-15 victory over the #7 Penn State Nittany Lions, I felt the need to do some writing. Since I have not done any significant reading in the past few weeks, I promise, this blog will not be a book report. However, there will be more of those as soon as I find a piece of wrestling literature that meets my golden standard.
Instead, I wanted to introduce you to another of the feature series that I intend to work out throughout the course of the next year and beyond, “This Week in College Wrestling.” For the post part, what this weekly column will be in its most basic sense is a quick rundown of the key points from the previous week of wrestling, coupled with a breakdown of the best matches for the upcoming week. For the latter, I (the great analyst that I am, LOL) will make predictions on the outcomes of each individual bout, as well as the dual in whole. Following my not so impressive forecasting of the Hofstra/Upenn match, my confidence is not at its all time high. Therefore, if I nail 60 percent, lets call it a good week. Deal?
Since I am starting this column on a Monday (actually it’s 1:42 am on Tuesday, but I am sure you get the point), for our purposes, the wrestling week will go from Monday-Sunday. Thankfully, there were no marquee duals yesterday. Therefore, things worked out nicely and nothing had to be omitted.
Looking towards the week ahead, it goes without saying that the event that everyone is talking about is the Journeymen/Brute Sprawl & Brawl, featuring the likes of #7 Penn State, #14 Boise State, #15 Edinboro and #23 West Virginia. Whenever this much talent assembles under one roof, battles of the highest degree are sure to follow….More on this event later. For the time being, lets turn our attention towards the major news from this past week. After all, any parent or teacher will tell you, “you can’t build on the future without first reflecting on the past.”
Wrestling Recap:
- Hofstra upends #7 Penn State: Led by the trio of Justin Accordino (141), Joe Fagiano (197), and Lou Ruggirello (133) who all earned bonus points in victories over their Nittany Lions opponents, the unranked Hofstra wrestling team pulled the first upset of the season, shocking PSU faithful 18-15 in front of a hostile State College crowd. Trailing 15-11 heading into his bout at 125, true freshman, Steve Bonanno (Wantagh, NY) overcame a 6-2 deficit and emerged with an 8-6 sv win in order to keep HU alive in their upset bid. Ruggirello proceeded to turn the home crowd pale white as they watched him dominate Tim Haas 9-0 to secure the Pride victory….While they may have lost the dual, not all was lost for Penn State. At 174 pounds, true freshman, Quentin Wright, making his college debut on three days notice, scored a takedown at the buzzer to upset HU’s sixth-ranked wrestler, Alton Lucas (West Babylon). Hofstra returns to the mat on November 22nd to wrestle against #5 Missouri in Columbus. Penn State will dual against #4 Cornell on Friday the 21st.
-Two #1s Fall: It’s only approximately two weeks into the season and already a pair of pre-season #1 at their respective weight classes have gone down. At 157, 2008 NCAA Champion, Jordan Leen from Cornell, made the finals of the Binghamton Open before running into former 4x NYS Champion, J.P. O’Connor, a two-time All-American for Harvard. Tied 5-5 at the end of regulation, it was the Crimson wrestler who took the title with a sudden victory takedown. O’Connor entered the bout ranked fifth in the nation…..A day later it was the top ranked wrestler at 165, Missouri’s Nick Marable, who got bumped from his perch. Tied 1-1 with #17 ranked Andy Rendos from Bucknell, Marable, who finished third at the 2008 NCAA tournament, surrendered a two point move in overtime to lose 3-1. Missouri went on to win the dual over the Bison, 25-16.
-High Schooler, Grajales, wins East Stroudsburg Open: Brandon High School (FL) senior, Eric Grajales, won the 141-pound weight class at the 2008 East Stroudsburg open on Saturday November 15. Grajales, the #2 recruit from the class of 2009, went 5-0 on the day, winning the title via a 8-5 decision over fellow high schooler, Pennsylvania’s Andrew Alton. Alton, only a junior this year, is expected to be among the top-5 recruits in next year’s InterMat top-100.
-Nickerson Returns, Reinjures Shoulder: Former 5x NYS Champion made his return to the mat this past weekend at the Binghamton/Bearcat Open. After winning his first two bouts via first period pin, The Cornell junior pulled out of the tournament because of shoulder pain. Nickerson missed all of the 2008 season with a shoulder injury. Addressing the issue, Big Red Head Coach, Rob Koll, said that the decision to default out of the tournament was mostly cautionary and Troy will very likely be back for the dual against Penn State on November 21st. Troy is also expected to still compete in the N.W.C.A All-Star Classic against Iowa’s #3 ranked, Charlie Falck on November 24th.
Key Duals For the Upcoming Week (w/predictions)–Lineups Subject to Change
#2 Iowa State vs. #12 Wisconsin-November 21, 2008
Synopsis: Despite this being a battle of top-15 teams, look for the Cyclones to win this one comfortably. Favored in eight of the ten bouts, Cael Sanderson’s team is out to prove that their #2 national ranking is rightfully justified….The Badgers hope to build off out a strong opening weekend, as they went 3-0 in dual wins over Virginia, NC State, and North Carolina. UW 197-pounder. Dallas Herbst, who broke a 30 year school record for career falls, will be matched up in one of the featured bouts of the dual against two-time NCAA runner-up, Jake Varner….The second major bout will come one weight class later, as David Zabriskie will be pitted against Kyle Massey in a battle of the top-3 ranked wrestlers. I give the Clones the edge in both.

# 4 Cornell vs. #7 Penn State—November 21, 2008
Synopsis: Following their upset loss to unranked Hofstra, Penn State will need to pull off a few upsets of their own when they face Cornell this Friday. The best chance for the Nittany Lions, whom I have losing seven of the 10 bouts, may come at 133 where Cornell might be forced to wrestle an undersized Frank Perrelli in order to avoid surrendering the automatic six….Last weekend, the Big Red participated in the Binghamton/Bearcat Open where they crowned five champions, not including Troy Nickerson who looked well on his way to winning the hardware before opting to default out of the tournament to nurse a reaggravation of last season’s shoulder injury…On paper, the marquee bout of the evening will come at 157, where #1 ranked Jordan Leen is scheduled to compete against #3 Dan Vallimont. There is talk however that since these two talented grapplers are set to meet at the N.W.C.A All-Star classic on the 24th, one or both will be a scratch in this dual.
125- #2 Troy Nickerson (Corn) dec Brad Pataky (PSU) 3-0 Cornell
133- Frank Perrelli (Corn) dec Tim Haas (PSU) 6-0
141- #3 Mike Grey (Corn) dec Frank Molinaro (PSU) 9-0
149- #2 Bubba Jenkins (PSU) dec DJ Meagher (Corn) 9-3
157- #3 Dan Vallimont (PSU) dec #1Jordan Leen (Corn) 9-6
165- #2 Mack Lewnes (Corn) dec Mark Friend (PSU) 12-6
174- #5 Steve Anceravage (Corn) dec Quentin Wright (PSU) 15-6
184- #15 Phil Bomberger (PSU) dec #20 Justin Kerber (Corn) 15-9

285- #10 Zach Hammond (Corn) dec Cameron Wade (PSU) 21-9
Toss-ups/Potential Upsets: 133, 157, 184, 285
Potential Cornell Bonus Points: 125, 165
Potential PSU Bonus Points: None

#10 Michigan vs. #23 Lehigh—November 21, 2008
Synopsis: Perhaps I am inspired by Hofstra’s win last Sunday but I am going to go out on a limb and predict that the underdog Lehigh squad will not only win, but crush their Wolverine opponents. Lehigh enters this dual with a 2-0 record, having beaten Maryland and Pittsburgh on back-to-back weekends. After coming into the season unranked, the Mountainhawks are quickly moving themselves up the list of the nation’s top-25….Michigan is nothing if not young. Of the 10 UM projected starters, two are freshman and four are sophomores. This means that alot of pressure will be put on upperclassmen Mike Watts, Steve Luke, and Tyrel Todd to lead from example. To me, the Wolverines are a team that is built to go great things in tournament play, but may take their fair share of lumps during the dual portion of the season….It was difficult to decide upon a marquee matchup because quite frankly, none of them really got me exiced. However, if a spot bout had to be designated, it would no doubt occur at 174 where #1 ranked Steve Luke will go against #13 Alex Caruso. Expect a low scoring bout.
125- Connor McDonald (Lehigh) dec Mike Watts (UM) 3-0 Lehigh
133- #19 Matt Fisk (Lehigh) dec Zac Stevens (UM) 6-0
141- #5 Kellen Russell (UM) dec Seth Ciasulli (Lehigh) 6-3
149- #14 Trevor Chinn (Lehigh) dec Justin Chrzanowski (UM) 9-3
157- Sean Bilodeau (Lehigh) dec Aaron Hynes (UM) 12-3
165- Mike Galante (Lehigh) dec Justin Zeerip (UM) 15-3
174- #1 Steve Luke (UM) dec #13 Alex Caruso (Lehigh), 15-6
184- #17 David Craig (Lehigh) dec Anthony Biondo (UM) 18-6
197- #3 Tyrel Todd (UM) dec Joe Kennedy (Lehigh) 18-9
285- Zack Rey (Lehigh) dec Eddie Phillips (UM) 21-9
Toss-ups/Potential Upsets: 125, 165
Potential Lehigh Bonus Points: 184
Potential UM Bonus Points: 197

#5 Missouri vs. Hofstra—November 22, 2008
Synopsis: After toppling the #7 in the country last week, Shifflet’s team will need to be on the top of their game again this Saturday as they square off with the #5 Missouri Tigers. Much like last week, the name of the game for the Pride is to wrestle to a 5-5 split in the bouts and hope to win on the strength of a bonus point or two. Unfortunately, exactly like last week, they enter this dual as the underdogs in six of the 10 bouts, with Mizzou holding a 3-1 advantage in potential bonus point opportunities…Looking at the matchups, it seems that the Pride’s two best upset possibilities will come in the persons of Steve Bonanno and Alton Lucas. Bonanno proved last week how clutch he could be, overcoming a four point deficit to emerge with a sv win over a much more experience Brad Patasky. On Saturday, he will be matched up against RS freshman, Troy Dolan, a former Pennsylvania AA State Champion. Despite coming into the year as one of the most highly touted freshmen, Dolan has been in a funk thus far, giving up bonus points in each of his two bouts this season. If Dolan is not able to recapture the form that made win a winner at the 2007 Dapper Dan Classic, the Tigers may find themselves in something of a hole. The second best chance HU has to steal a bout away from Missouri is our featured match at 174. In this matchup of 2008 All-Americans, Alton Lucas, for the first time in quite a while may find himself as the smaller man. Raymond Jordan moves down from 184 for the first time in his career. Whether or not the weight cut wll have any effect on him is yet to be seen. One thing is for certain though, if Lucas intends to wrestle the same way he did in the dual against Penn State, he might as well stay home and watch college football….Missouri will come into this dual with an unblemished 2-0 record following wins this past weekend over Lock Haven and Bucknell.
125- Troy Dolan (Mizzou) dec Steve Bonanno (HU) 3-0 Missouri
133- #7 Lou Ruggirello (HU) dec Todd Schavrien (Mizzou) 3-3
141- Justin Accordino (HU) dec Marcus Hoehn (Mizzou) 6-3 Hofstra
149- P.J. Gillespie (HU) dec Andrew Sherry (Mizzou) 9-3
157- #15 Jon Bonilla-Bowman (HU) dec Emanuel Brooks (Mizzou) 12-3
165- #1 Nick Marable (Mizzou) dec Ryan Patrovich (HU), 12-6
174- #4 Raymond Jordan (Mizzou) dec #6 Alton Lucas (HU) 12-9
184- Dorian Henderson (Mizzou) dec Ben Clymer (HU) 12-12
197- #6 Max Askren (Mizzou) dec #17 Joe Fagiano (HU) 15-12 Missouri
285- Dom Bradley (Mizzou) dec Jordan Enck (HU) 18-12
Toss-ups/Potential Upsets: 125, 174, 184
Potential Missouri Bonus Points: 165, 197, 285
Potential HU Bonus Points: 133

#8 Oklahoma State vs. #19 Old Dominion—November 22, 2008
Synopsis: I must admit, I never thought the day would come that I would be able to call this a top end dual. I suppose I, like a lot of people, am guilty of underestimating Coach Martin. Since taking over for the legendary, Gray Simons, Martin has steadily built the Monarchs into a real national contender. So much, in fact, that in playing out the predictions in my head, I settled on a 5-5 split. Leading the charge for ODU will be their three-headed monster of Nicholson, Hutter, and Williams. If ODU has only hopes at all of shocking the world, it would be imperative that this 1-2-3 punch launch them to a 9-0 lead. This, however, is not easy task, as John Smith’s Cowboys will counter with Obe Blanc, Tyler Shinn, and either Jamal Parks or Luke Ashmore. With seven of the ten bouts falling into the category of toss up, it would appear that this dual will be decided by the question, who wants it more? If the Cowboys emerge with victories in all of the close matches, this one could become misleadingly ugly. However, I don’t see that happening. My guess is that the Cowboys will win, but only because of a bonus point victory in the heavyweight match. Either way, I fully expect the Monarchs to leave the arena with their heads held high. On Saturday, they will prove to the world that they are now a force to reckon with…..Spot light matchup: 133-#12 Kyle Hutter vs. #11 Tyler Shinn.
125- #5 James Nicholson (ODU) dec #6 Obe Blanc (OSU) 3-0 Old Dominion
133- #12 Kyle Hutter (ODU) dec #11 Tyler Shinn (OSU) 6-0
141- #15 Ryan Williams (ODU) dec Luke Ashmore/Jamal Parks (OSU) 9-0
149- Luke Silver (OSU) dec Kaylen Baxter/Joey Metzler (ODU) 9-3
157- #12 Newly McSpadden (OSU) dec Dan Rivera 9-6
165- #10 Brandon Mason (OSU) dec #15 Chris Brown (ODU) 9-9
174- Eric Decker/Travis Coffey (ODU) dec Kyle Griffin/Cody Hill (OSU) 12-9 Old Dominion
184- Joe Budi (ODU) dec Jared Shelton (OSU) 15-9
197- #18 Clayton Foster (OSU) dec Jesse Strawn (ODU) 15-12
285- #1 Jared Rosholt (OSU) dec Roy Dragon (ODU) 15-15
Toss-ups/Potentials Upsets: 125, 133, 141, 149, 165, 174, 184
Potential ODU Bonus Points: None
Potential OSU Bonus Points: 285

#10 Michigan vs. #20 UPenn–November 22, 2008
Synopsis: Oddly enough, I see this dual playing out almost identical to Michigan’s match with Lehigh. I expect UM’s elite trio of Russell, Luke, and Todd to all win in convincing fashion. However, when facing an opponent consisting of five nationally ranked wrestlers, it is usually going to take more than three wins to get the job done. For the Wolverines to even salvage a tie in this dual, I suspect they will need to pull the upset at 133. Ortenzio is solid but not spectacular for the Quakers. Therefore, if Zac Stevens is able to summon his innter Quentin Wright, he may very well be able to force a 5-5 split. Should they happen, UM would be favored to earn the “w’ on the strength of bonus points from either Russell or Todd….If the Quakers hold serve at 125, 149, 157, 165, and 285, they are in a very good position. While I consider Biondo from Michigan to be a slight favorite at 184, it would not surprise me to see the hardworking Hitschler battle his way to victory.
125- #7 Rollie Peterkin (UPenn) dec Mike Watts (UM) 3-0 UPenn
133- Bryan Ortenzio (UPenn) dec Zac Stevens (UM) 6-0
141- #5 Kellen Russell (UM) dec Brett McCurdy/Zack Kemmerer (Upenn) 6-3
149- #12 Cesar Grajales (UPenn) dec Justin Chrzanowski (UM) 9-3
157- #18 Matt Dragon (UPenn) dec Aaron Hynes (UM 12-3
165- #9 Zach Shanaman (UPenn) dec Justin Zeerip (UM) 15-3
174- #1 Steve Luke (UM) dec #17 Scott Giffin (UPenn) 15-6
184- Anthony Biondo (UM) dec Colin Hitschler (UPenn) 15-9
197- #3 Tyrel Todd (UM) dec Jack Sullivan (UPenn) 15-12
285- Trey McLean (UPenn) dec Eddie Phillips (UM) 18-12

#7 Penn State vs. #15 Edinboro—November 23, 2008 (Sprawl & Brawl)
Synopsis: There are three gaurantees in life, death, taxes, and Penn State fans are going to hate me after this weekend. As hard as I am trying to do the contrary, it seems that whenever I sit down to forcast a PSU match, I can never finish it with them on the winning end. To be, the Nittany Lions’ holes at 133, 165, and 197 are going to be too much to overcome against a very deep team like Edinboro. In fact, even after willingly giving them the upset at 174 (Wright over Moricone), I still could not declare them the winners, because my heart tells me that both Gregor Gillespie and Chris Honeycutt are going to best their higher ranked opponents. Heck, even if the Fighting Scots split 157 and 184, they still wind up with no worse than a tie…What is scary about this situation is that I am calling for an upset of the #7 team in the country despite knowing that Paul Donahoe will not be able to compete. Can you imagine how strong Tim Flynn’s team is going to be come March. I am not a better man (actually I am a little bit, but that’s taboo) but the smart money has Edinboro in the top-10 at Nationals….Highlighted Bout: 157- #3 Dan Vallimont vs. #4 Gregor Gillespie
125- Brad Pataky (PSU) dec Kyle Fluke (Edinboro) 3-0 Penn State
133- #15 Ricky Deubel (Edinboro) dec Tim Haas (PSU) 3-3
141- Frank Molinaro (PSU) dec Joel Webster (Edinboro) 6-3 Penn State
149- #2 Bubba Jenkins (PSU) dec #16 Torsten Gillespie (Edinboro) 9-3
157- #4 Gregor Gillespie (Edinboro) dec #3 Dan Vallimont (PSU) 9-6
165- #6 Jarrod King (Edinboro) dec Mark Friend (PSU) 9-9
174- Quentin Wright (PSU) dec #16 Phil Moricone (Edinboro) 12-9 Edinboro
184- #16 Chris Honeycutt (Edinboro) dec #15 Phil Bomberger (PSU) 12-12
197- Pat Bradshaw (Edinboro) dec Andrew Haile (PSU) 15-12 Edinboro
285- #8 Joe Fendone (Edinboro) dec Cameron Wade (PSU) 18-12
Toss-ups/Potential Upsets: 125, 157, 174, 184
Potential Edinboro Bonus Points: 133
Potential PSU Bonus Points: None

#14 Boise State vs. #15 Edinboro—November 23, 2008 (Sprawl & Brawl)
Synopsis: It is duals like this one that Frank Popolizio dreamed about when he created the Sprawl & Brawl. On paper, these two teams are about as evenly matched as possible. Six of the ten bouts will pit two nationally ranked wrestlers against one another (with each side favored in three of these bouts). Should Edinboro be able to upend the Nittany Lions in the morning session, the winner of this dual could possibly be looking at the opportunity to move into the national top-10. With none of the projected matchups expected to yield bonus points, the winner of this dual will be decided by the question, which team will be the first to blink? For Edinboro to win, it is imperative that they avoid upsets at 157, 165, and 285. Likewise, the Broncos must be sure to hold serve at 133, 174, and 184…From these six bouts, the one that I feel has the best chance to go the other way is 174. Despite winning a Pac-10 title last season, thus far, Lee has been less than desired for BSU, failing to place in the Elite division of the Cowboy Open. Should this slump carry over to Sunday, Lee may very well putting his team into a predictament that they are unable to overcome. For the marquee matchup of the dual, I actually selected one of the bouts not involving a top-25 grappler. My reasoning was quite simple. While I was able to make nine out of 10 predictions with confidence, I was torn on which way to go at 125. Fluke has been as steady as can be expected for Edinboro, going 2-1 in dual action while filling in for Paul Donahoe. On the other hand, Brian Owen was one of the jewels of the Boise State recruiting class. He came to the Boise, ID based campus with one of the most heralded scholastic resumes in Washington State history. However, this is not high school anymore. Therefore, on the srength of the superior experience, I am giving the edge to Fluke.
125- Kyle Fluke (Edinboro) dec Brian Owen (BSU) 3-0 Edinboro
133- #9 Andrew Hochstrasser (BSU) dec #15 Ricky Deubel (Edinboro) 3-3
141- #11 Cory Fish (BSU) dec Joel Webster (Edinboro) 6-3 Boise State
149- #16 Torsten Gillespie (Edinboro) dec Nathaniel Holt (BSU) 6-6
157- #4 Gregor Gillespie (Edinboro) dec #10 Adam Hall (BSU) 9-6 Edinboro
165- #6 Jarrod King (Edinboro) dec #11 Tyler Sherfey (BSU) 12-6
174- #8 Nate Lee (BSU) dec #16 Phil Moricone (Edinboro) 12-9
184- #5 Kirk Smith (BSU) dec #16 Chris Honeycutt (Edinboro) 12-12
197- #9 Brent Chriswell (BSU) dec Pat Bradshaw (Edinboro) 15-12 Boise State
285- #8 Joe Fendone (Edinboro) dec #18 Nick Smith (BSU) 15-15
Toss-ups/Potential Upsets: 125, 133, 157, 165, 174, 184
Potential Edinboro Bonus Points: None
Potential Boise State Bonus Points: None

#18 Oklahoma vs. #19 Old Dominion—November 23, 2008
Synopsis: Similar to their dual against Oklahoma State, I expect this ODU dual to be decided in the final bout. Unfortunately for the Monarchs, I don’t foresee them coming out on top of this one either. In a dual that I figure might present one opportunity a piece to earn bonus points, the name of the game is to win six out of 10 (or, at the very least, force a 5-5 split). Unlike the dual against OSU, I do not feel the matchups are there for Martin’s boys to do either. Take for instance, 141. In my write-up on their dual against the Cowboys, I made it clear how important I considered it for ODU to jump out ahead 9-0. However, as much as I respect Ryan Williams, my gut tells me that in front of his own crowd, it will be Bailey who gets his hand raised in victory. Another weight class that I feel will haunt ODU in this dual is 174. Against OSU, the Monarchs were dealing with a pair of young and unproven opponents. Jeff James, ranked #10 in the nation, is quite a step up. Coming on the tails of both Coffey and Decker going 1-2 and failing to place at the Hokie Open, I can not in good conscience call for an upset of a top-10 opponent. Despite being as loyal a CAA enthusiast as you can find, I regretfully wrap up this blog by declaring a Sooner victory.
125- #5 James Nicholson (ODU) dec #16 Joey Fio (Oklahoma) 3-0 Old Dominion
133- #12 Kyle Hutter (ODU) dec David Armstrong (Oklahoma) 6-0
141- #9 Zack Bailey (Oklahoma) dec #15 Ryan Williams (ODU) 6-3
149- Will Rowe/#15 Kyle Terry (Oklahoma) dec Kaylen Baxter/Joey Metzler (ODU) 6-6
157- #14 Shane Vernon (Oklahoma) dec Dan Rivera (ODU) 9-6 Oklahoma
165- #15 Chris Brown (ODU) dec Ryan Smith (Oklahoma) 9-9
174- #10 Jeff James (Oklahoma) dec Eric Decker/Travis Coffey (ODU) 12-9 Oklahoma
184- Joe Budi (Old Dominion) dec Pat Flynn (Oklahoma) 12-12
197- #10 Eric Lapotsky (Oklahoma) dec Jesse Strawn (ODU) 15-12 Oklahoma
285- Nathan Fernandez (Oklahoma) dec Roy Dragon (ODU) 18-12
Toss-ups/Potential Upsets: 125, 141, 174, 184, 285
Potential Oklahoma Bonus Points: 157
Potential ODU Bonus Points: 165
